Time you dime store bandit stealing candy from a jar!
The Dime store with it’s wooden floors and ceiling fans is gone-- rolled up and disappeared into the Wal Mart isle
And here is my question—
Where did my two tow headed little boys go? We played Frisbee in Big Thunder Park, ice skated on frozen ponds and read Dr. Suess before bed time long ago when my teen years had just vanished like a puff of smoke.
Time was that you shuffling by my door to the tune of “Time is On My Side?”
Where did all the bright eyed inquisitive children that I taught to read and write escape to when their school year was done?
Time stepped up his incessant rhythm with a “Nick Nack Paddy Wack”---
My two tow headed little men became suntanned summer boys, all brown elbows and knees, that brought home frogs to put in my tub.
Time chuckled weirdly through those days and sang along with “Let’s Hear it for the Boys.”
Where are those days of clapboard homes and banging screen doors filled with noisy children and star filled firefly nights?
Time lingered briefly tapping his foot always in a hurry for the winter of old age.
Choirs sang—Preachers preached—people prayed and
Sunday School buses filled with laughing children drove away into Time’s haze.
While he hid himself in wooden pews and became fat on family potlucks.
Where did my little dark haired brown eyed “tortilla baby” go? The one I played “Dukes of Hazard” on the hood of an old blue Pontiac with?
Time stepped it up and break danced up the street.
While my brown eyed son grew; his brothers amassed basketball trophies, worked late shifts at McD’s and graduated.
He reached his teen years in a split level in another neighborhood, got his license, worked late nights at BK, “pimped his ride” and graduated.
I think I heard Time squealing his tires as he hit the road.
Then another little tow headed boy was born with thoughtful blue eyes, picture of his father, grandson of mine.
Time tip toed by my door.
I moved to the country and life was like a cerulean dream of flowered fields and murmuring pines.
Then arrived a granddaughter with her laughter at the wide open expanse of sky and dancing in rhythm to summer thunderstorms the antithesis of her quiet cautious brother.
Time galloped by on a wild dark horse dragging me with him kicking and screaming.
City life loomed large like a bad dream and left me breathless with grandchildren to care for and more children to teach.
In the midst of the swirl of traffic and sirens and confusion of sun baked streets and toothless, raggedy homeless people begging for bread and selling their plasma returning to bullet riddled homes with needles of pain.
Another surprise grandson arrived on the winter solstice. I held the little bairn in my arms so precious and sweet and thanked God for his birth--
While time twiddled his thumbs waiting for me.
Time now has stolen their golden curls and turned the two towheaded boys into gray haired men.
The blue eyed grandson is stepping into manhood.
The laughing little girl has entered her stormy teens.
And Time has left the building so to speak and went on to greener pastures.
The theft he has perpetuated upon my life he now plans for some other unsuspecting busy person.
If you are young-- Beware he is there lurking in the shadows ready to steal more candy from the jar of life and gobble it up at break neck speed leaving you to wonder one day when you wake up to a silent house—Where did the time go?
“Cherish the Day!!”
