“Celeste, we are not little kids. We don’t need to stay friends,” she said.
“What is going on with you?” Celeste asked.
“I’m fine. I just want to be left alone.”
“I don’t even recognize you anymore. It’s like you’ve changed overnight.”
“Get used to it,” she said and hung up the phone.
Celeste didn’t know what Lisa was into. She started dating boys a bit early and her choices of boys were questionable. Lisa was going through some changes in her life but nothing that would explain her bad attitude. It affected her grades, her friendships, her family, and her outlook on life in general. Even her dance class noticed that something was going on with Lisa. It seemed as if the light in her just grew dim.
About six months ago, Lisa’s brother Greg talked to Lisa about the types of men that she had started dating. These guys were a bit rough around the edges and seemed to be familiar with the criminal justice system. He knew Lisa should be more careful about the guys she went out with but he was looking out for her safety. Lisa took his intentions the wrong way, got offended, and the discussion turned into a big fight.
The fact that Celeste was dating Lisa’s brother seemed to be just part of the problem. Lisa and Celeste were great friends, but where Celeste and Greg decided to remain virgins until marriage, Lisa couldn’t wait to get out of the house and start dating different men. It had become very tense around the house lately.
Celeste stared at the phone. She wanted to call Lisa and give her the news but she didn’t want any attitude. Last night, Greg proposed to Celeste and everyone wanted Lisa to be supportive. The fact that Lisa decided to go her separate way and live a different lifestyle made things difficult for the entire family.
However, Celeste knew that God is all about love and forgiveness and she prayed that when Lisa picked up the phone, that she would be willing to talk to her. She loved Lisa and wanted their friendship back, especially now that they will soon become sisters.
Celeste said a quick prayer and dialed Lisa’s number from memory.
“Lisa…” Celeste said.
“Hey girl. I was just thinking about you.”
