In the distance she heard a vice calling her name. She knew that she should go back, but she just could not make herself do it. Instead she picked up her backpack, crossed the meadow and headed for the train tracks that lead out of town.
As she walked, she wondered if anyone would even really miss her. Not that it mattered. She wished for the millionth time that her mother were alive. Her mother had loved her. Now that she was gone, no one seemed to remember that she existed. Her father had never shown much interest in her and now he barely even acknowledged her. The hired help on the farm were the only ones who looked after her, and she was pretty sure that was just for the money.
She supposed Miss Susan at church might miss her. Miss Susan always talked to her like she was important, like she mattered. She wondered what Miss Susan would think about her running away. Was it really running away when there was nothing to run from? What if wherever she ended up no one cared about her either? Then again whatever small town she went to she would not have family. Those were the people that were supposed to love you no matter what. It hadn’t worked out that way so far, so what were the chances that anything would be different anywhere else?
She picked up a handful of rocks by the tracks and began to throw them as far up the track as she could get them. One hit something metal and made a loud noise. Ashley dove off the tracks and behind some bushes to avoid being caught. She held her breath and listed to the sounds around her. No one seemed to be coming. As she rose to resume her trek she heard music that began to get louder as she listened. She instinctively started walking towards the sounds.
“Come and go with me to my father’s house.
It’s a big, big house with lots and lots of room.”
She had heard the song before from Miss Susan, it was one of her favorites. As she approached to old church building she knew that the song was right. Home was with Jesus, but for now her life was here. Running away wasn’t going to solve anything. She remembered Miss Susan telling her to ask God if she needed help. She knelt in the grass and prayed just before she went into the small church building.
She sat in the back and listened to the music for a while. Eventually she asked a lady for a ride back home. The lady reminded her of her mother. She seemed very worried that Ashley had been out on her own so far from home. Ashley assured her that she was fine, she had just lost her way for a little while.
When the car pulled into the driveway of the farm, Ashley said thanks and jumped out. Before she went inside she bent down and grabbed another daisy. This time she pulled all the petals off in one motion. “He loves Me!” she shouted. Then she pulled open the big door and walked in.
