TITLE: Pebble's Story | Previous Challenge Entry

Their leader was named Pebble. Pebble wasn’t the biggest or smartest but he told stories they liked to hear (oh yes, rocks can talk). His best friend was Nugget. Nugget loved to hear Pebble’s stories, he knew they weren’t real but they were fun to listen to and made everyone laugh.
There was only one girl stone, her name was Gem. She was charming, cute and the brightest. Granite was the biggest and the strongest. The littlest was Marble; he was the best-rounded one of all.
Their father’s name was Rolling Stone and when he bumped into their mother,
Boulder, they all were born. Mother always said they were a chip off the old block.
Nothing exciting ever happened to them, until the day when Pebble was telling one of his stories and they heard a great big roar. The largest person that they had ever seen was growling and shouting terrible things to people on the other side of the brook. He was calling them names, bad names, and calling their god names too. The stones didn’t like him calling their God names; He was their Creator. They tried not to listen but they couldn’t cover their ears; they didn’t have any hands and they didn’t know where their ears were anyway. They tried to tell the giant to stop but giants don’t understand stone language.
For days the giant would come to the brook and yell. He wanted to fight someone but no one ever did.
One day, before the giant came, a boy picked up the five smooth stones and put them in a bag. He was going to fight the giant.
“What’s going on? Where are we going?” asked Gem. The stones were so scared.
The boy started running. The stones were jiggling all around. They heard the giant running towards them. The giant was saying those terrible things again and the boy told him he wasn’t supposed to talk like that, especially about God. The giant just laughed and kept running.
A hand reached into the bag and grabbed Pebble. Before anyone could say anything, he was gone. They heard a whooshing sound and Pebble yelling then his voice became farther and farther away. “What is happening?” Marble asked.
Pebble was flying through the air really, really fast. He was heading right for the giant’s head. The giant didn’t see Pebble coming.
BAM! He hit that old giant right in the noggin.
The giant fell to the ground and Pebble hopped off. He saw the boy take the giant’s sword and climb on top of him. Pebble didn’t look because he knew what the boy was going to do to that mean ol’ giant.
When the boy jumped off the giant the other stones popped out of the bag and landed right next to Pebble. They asked Pebble what happened. He told them how the boy picked him for a very important fight. How he sat in the sling and how much he liked going round and round and then flying as fast as he could straight for that giant. He told them how he tried to aim himself right at him. He told them how hard he hit the giant – so hard it broke the giant’s head and knocked him down. All the stones cheered.
Granite said, “Pebble, you are my hero. You are so brave.” Gem rolled over and gave him a little smack. Marble was so proud to have a big brother like Pebble.
And Nugget loved hearing the story over and over because he was there with his brother when it all happened. The story is carried by all the streams in all the world to this very day. It was the proudest day for every stone in the world – the day Pebble helped kill the mean giant!
Boys and girls, when you’re by a stream pick up a stone and study it perhaps you will hear a story too. It might be one of Nugget’s rich tales, a beauty of Gem’s, a solid account by Granite, or even of Marble winning a game. All rocks have stories but to understand their language takes imagination. Don’t stand too close to the brook because the stone will all try to talk at once and it’ll sound like babbling.
