The Cinerama


The music roared as the credits rolled. Another fine romance I thought. Just love that Cary Grant…so debonaire.

“Howdy, Adeline, can I get that for you?” a warm deep voice inquired. Glancing up at bright blue eyes and an engaging smile, I responded with a polite “Thank you!” as I relinquished the empty popcorn box. Harry was always cheery but his smile had a special something about it tonight. I traced the path of the rolling trash cart pushed by the warm deep voice as I had done countless times before, then began my usual Saturday night stroll from the Cinerama down Elm Street a few short blocks away.

It was a crisp fall evening, one that made me miss the strong and warming arms of my Thomas, gone for nearly ten years now. Both movie buffs, we reveled in our Saturday night outings to the movies, followed by a romantic walk down Elm Street toward home sweet home, our little cottage crafted under the umbrella of a massive oak tree.

Once in the front door, I aimed straight for the kitchen to put the kettle on for a cup of chamomile tea.

“Glad to see me aren’t you, Miss Priscilla?” My loyal kitty purred in agreement, rubbing against my leg.

Relaxing with my cup of tea, Miss Priscilla curled up near my feet on the ottoman. All was quiet except for the creaking of the furnace that soon enveloped me with warmth against the evening chill. Oh my, the nights are sure lonely, but Priscilla has been such a comfort.

For as long as I can remember I have been enthralled by the movies, saving every penny of my allowance as a child to spend on movie tickets. I enjoyed bringing my family to the theatre and at times my sweet Betsy and I wiled away hours entranced by the silver screen whenever we could afford a sitter.

Several years after Betsy was gone and I retired, I picked up a part time job at the Cinerama where one of the perks was being able to watch the movies for free before my “after the movie “ job started.

I wonder if she noticed anything different about me tonight? Maybe next Saturday night…no ,don’t even think about it, you’re in your twilight years I thought. Depositing the trash in the bin outdoors, I sauntered on home down Elm Street just a few short blocks away , passing the little cottage crafted under the umbrella of a massive oak tree as I had done so many Saturday nights before.

As I entered the gate, I could hear the welcoming barks of my faithful companion, Sparky. “Hey fellow, let’s get inside for a bite to eat,” I said patting his head. Sparky’s affection and company sure helps my loneliness.

I had just arrived at the Cinerama ticket booth when I heard a warm deep voice. “May I have the honor of accompanying you at the movie tonight, Adeline?” The question startled me but made me smile.

“Yes, Harry, I would like that.”

“Well then, let’s get the popcorn!” His blue eyes were sparkling.

As we settled in for the night’s feature, “An American in Paris”, I thought how nice it was to share my love of the movies with someone else once again.

Wonder if I should invite her to the Main Street Café after the movie? Well, for now I am happy to share a box of popcorn with someone else for a change.

However, she gladly accepted the invitation, even helping me with the theatre rounds after the movie. We shared steaming cups of coffee, apple pie, and a few laughs reminiscing about good times shared at the cafe together with Betsy and Thomas.

Such a lovely evening. So nice to have a companion tonight on the walk home. Miss Priscilla must be wondering what has kept me!

Somewhere in the distance a canine companion whimpered, waiting for his master’s return. And the stars shone brightly over the little cottage crafted under the umbrella of the massive oak tree.

All because of the Cinerama.

Warm, nostalgic material without getting too sentimental. I like the time shifts and the changes you've included with each one.

I enjoyed reading this story from both perspectives. You did a great job developing your characters. Sometimes sweet, gentle, quiet stories are quite powerful. I know this one is..."classic" is a good description of the story.
