Making his way through the crowded streets, Let the good times roll! It’s one big party these days. It’s hard not to join them right now but the money offered on this job could keep Jared and me dancing for a long time. Ah, there he is; I don’t get what he sees in other guys. It used to make me disgusted but now it’s so common.
“Jared, I’ve got something I need to show you.”
“Adam, can’t you see I’m busy?” giving the other guys a wink.
Pulling him aside, “Look at this ad.”
Labors, skilled and unskilled.
100 begonas a day plus food.
“100 begonas a day! Wow, that’s twenty times what I’m getting on unemployment. I can’t remember what actual work pays, it’s been so long since I had a job,” Jared’s eyes are fixed on the “100 begonas a day”.
“Hey, brother, it says skilled and unskilled. I think you can qualify for the latter, unless you flunk the entry exam!” Adam pokes him in the ribs. Jared notices the ad’s listed employer, “Adam, you see who’s offering this job? That nut, the preacher guy. His whole family is crazy. No way!”
“I saw it but I also saw the wages. We don’t have to listen to them. We’ve heard him preaching in the streets anyway. Surely we can tolerate it for a few days or weeks,” Adam tries to maintain Jared’s initial enthusiasm.
“Yea, but…” Jared scans the ad again, his eyes drawn back to the pay, “but what if he remembers us making fun of him. He probably wouldn’t hire us.”
Adam contemplates this and says, “Who hasn’t made fun of him or his family?”
“You’re right; everyone makes fun of him everyday. No harm in talking to him about the job, I guess.”
Checking the address on the ad they realize it’s where all the trees have been cut down and piled up. They’d been curious to what was going on but stayed away because it looked like work.
They took the back streets out of town. Not because they wanted to get there first for the best “unskilled” job but it would be embarrassing to be seen going there, let alone being seen associating with this family.
They were surprised to see several others there already and noticed they all looked somewhat uncomfortable being there. They decided to stay; they could always say “No” and leave.
Their potential employer kindly greeted each of them and began explaining what the job would entail. He presented a large, detailed draft.
Wow, that will be some big boat. He must want us all to move to where he can build it and float it out on the ocean. There’s no way a boat that size could be moved, Adam and Jared are both thinking the same thing and almost deciding to forget the whole thing when they hear he’s going to build it right there. Turn towards each other, they give a knowing look: This guy really is nuts!
To their surprise they were able to tune out their employer’s preaching most of the time. When it became too intolerable they quit and partied until their money ran out. They found it almost unbelievable they were hired back, this cycle went on for many years.
One day the massive boat was finished. They had more money in their pockets than they had in their lives, all the workers did. A few had met and married during this time and other had become engaged. Feasts were common over the years and a great celebration was planned for this last day of work.
Laughing, the workers were all heading back towards town, pleased they had made it through all the preaching when one of them yells, “Hey look! Noah and his family are going into the boat with all those animals. Let’s all wave.” Hoots and howls fill the air.
“Wow! What was that? I felt the earth tremble!” Hoots change to screams.
“It’s starting to pour! Wow! Oh wow!”
