Jason exited the car and made his way to the sliding door at the back of the house. Before he could get to his destination the door slide open to reveal a small round lady with perfectly white hair and the largest grin her face could hold.
“Happy Thanksgiving!” she exclaimed joyfully.
“Hey Grandma,” Jason responded clearly unimpressed.
“Come give Grandma a big hug.”
Jason shuffled over to his grandmother and gave her a quick hug then quickly made his way inside. It was all just as he remembered it. The long dining room table was filled with enough food to feed an entire city and adorned with all manners of fall decorations. The smell of the turkey baking in the oven made Jason mouth start to water and stomach start to growl. Although, the festive scene did not have the impact on him this year as it had in years past. He slumped down in one of the chairs and rested his head on his hands, staring at the central focus of the table’s centerpiece, a large round and very orange pumpkin.
His Grandma, noticing his demeanor, had made her way inside and over to where he was now sitting.
“What’s the matter, pumpkin?” Grandma inquired.
“It’s just that, Grandma,” Jason informed. “Just look at it. It’s short, fat, dirty, and just plain ole grumpy looking. So why do you always call me pumpkin? It’s just about the ugliest vegetable ever.”
Jason heard a small snicker escape his grandma before she quickly composed herself and started her explanation.
“Well, is that what is bothering you? Let me ask you a question Jason. What is your favorite dessert?”
“Pumpkin pie,” Jason answered.
“Uh-huh. And what is your favorite thing to do at Halloween?”
“Entering the “lit pumpkin” contest at school,” Jason confessed.
“Hmmm. And what, can you tell me, is your absolute favorite color?”
“So, that short fat dirty grumpy lookin vegetable is full of all your favorite things, which makes it the most wonderful thing in the world to me. See, sometimes it doesn’t do us good to look at what things are, but what they can and will be. That is why I call you my pumpkin because you are full of all my favorite things,” Grandma Cooper said with a wink.
Jason got up from the chair and squeezed his grandma harder than he ever had before.
“Thanks Grandma. I love you,” Jason said. “When’s dinner?” he quickly added with a laugh.
