I remember begging for release and welcoming my father’s request to remove it from my back. I would gladly give it over to him for whatever time he was willing to carry it for me. I would see him carrying not only what I could no longer carry but also that of the rest of my family. We would all be dragging behind, free from our burdens yet tired from the journey, and he would still keep the pace. Urging us on and encouraging us forward.
Inevitably I would feel guilty as I watched him stop and reposition and rub his shoulders from the weight. I would request to have my load back. He would eye me as if to say, “Are you sure?” Then, when he was convinced I knew what I wanted, he would help me by placing it on my back just so, and then I would be off again. Not as quickly as before, but at least, my conscience was less burdened. I even imagined picking up the pace and helping him out too, but my little frame couldn’t. He would see my defeat and, he would grab my hand and walk me through it, reminding me we were almost home.
When we would reach our destination we would collapse! Tired from the journey and free from our burdens, we would rest. Everything would be still and the room would be dark, and I would remember. I would sense the pain of that luggage biting into my back, but the weight was gone! After a brief prayer, I would breathe a sigh of relief and snuggle down closer between my mom and dad and go to sleep - free from pain, free from guilt, and free from the journey!
