As the little house crouched in the smacks of the storm.
But inside, the fire, with mocking tongue licked
Like a mischievous child, at the gale and her tricks.
Brazenly daring the outside to win,
Claiming the darkness, no longer dim.
Drawn in by fables, and fragrances sweet,
To the table of life, we had gathered to feast,
On apples we’d grown by the garden’s cool breath,
Now laid on the cloth for all who would wish,
To savor God’s goodness, taste stories, glimpse love
And from every choice morsel, delight in the crumbs.
Swift came the winter, that year to the hedgerows,
Buried like treasure, wrapped and forgotten
But memories flickered like firelight golden,
And under the blanket of snow we discovered,
That huddled together for warmth and for comfort,
Lost recollections, came flooding, came calling.
They whistled like wind in the corner, they hissed.
The fables of winter, came blizzard like, quick.
Lamps cast deep shadows and little ones’ eyes,
Grew moonlike, transfixed, as tellers so wise
Unfolded the legends of yesterday’s snow bursts,
And colored the night with their masterful chills.
Walnuts were cracked and offered with honey,
Cinnamon sprinkled on fruit, stewed and soft.
“Tell us more stories!” the children begged boldly,
Plucky and brave, just as loud as the wind,
Safe in the snugness of toasty embraces,
Bound warm, in the arms of a mother’s sweet kiss.
Drifting in darkness, the pain was remembered,
The tears of the wounded, crept silently in.
Tempests and squalls which had struck long ago
Were retold as the listeners shivered in awe.
And each one who told of the rawness remembered,
The ache and the echo of wintertime’s sting.
But the voice of a Savior, had stilled the blind chaos,
As radiant visions of snow drifts emerged.
And the blast which condemned, once to misery’s portion
Now heralded hope and the brilliance of God.
For covered and pure like a whiteness not known,
Once strangers to life, were now whiter than snow.
Rejoicing, sweet laughter, the table resounded,
With thankful hearts swollen, humbled and free.
The nut shells were scattered as hands held their neighbors
To thank God in heaven for all of His gifts.
Including the winter, which showered the cottage,
And all of its children in blessings so rich.
