infused my dreams with sound.
Clumps of snow rolled down the roof
and plopped! onto the ground.
A sudden crack of gunshot
jerked me wide awake in dread.
But reality, no weapons seen,
changed fear to verve instead.
I grabbed my boots and parka,
quickly skid-danced to the shore.
My eyes and ears confirmed the hunch-
Spring breakup came once more!
All along the shoreline
people stood and gawked in awe.
The frozen mass of winter’s wrath
groaned from its tortured thaw.
Sketched fissures radiated
from the center of the floe,
expanded into runnels,
birthing isles of ice and snow.
Slabs with different points of view
shouldered, shoved with force;
deciding which had right of way,
continued on their course.
Smaller chunks, less fortunate,
could only bob and shiver.
Run over by aggressive blocks,
they shrank and joined the river.
As open-water loomed and grew,
the ice-jam moved downstream.
Tonight we’ll meet and celebrate
the sanction of a dream.
No longer in an icy grip,
waves slapped against the quay.
Whitewater roared in its escape
and rushed upon its way.
Author’s note: The end of a dark, harsh winter in the far north can certainly be a
reason for residents to celebrate. In many regions, however, spring breakup creates
vast amounts of devastating floodwaters
