"Mama! Mama!" she cried as she burst through the door.
Silence greeted the child, and an empty house.
The day before, the teacher had told the children "We're going to play a game of Hide and Seek, and your parents are going to play with us!" The classroom full of 5 year-old's buzzed with excitement.
The man in the tan uniform stepped forward, one hand holding up a shiny, metal object that sparkled on all sides.
"See, see, you like this? You want to take this home?"
Each small head nodded eagerly.
"Your parents have a book like this," in his other hand he held up a book with gold-edged pages.
"Go home, and when your parents go to sleep, find the book in the place where they hide it. Tomorrow, you will bring it to your teacher, and your teacher will give you one of these." He twirled the object in his other hand, and its colors twinkled hypnotically."
"Part of the game is to not tell your parents or anyone else. If they find out, you lose the game."
Mai Li couldn't wait for dinner to be over, prayers said, and eagerly announced that it was bedtime, much to the surprise of both of her parents.
"Small one, who has come and taken away our little Mai Li?" they laughed, tucking her in. "Good night, and the Good Lord watch over you."
Mai Li pulled up the covers under her chin and waited for the house to get quiet.
It was dark, but she knew her way to the hole in the floor where the vegetables were stored. She feared that the small piece of wood that covered it would make a noise, but it was silent. Feeling below among the roots, her fingers finally touched the thin pages of the book she was seeking.
The next morning she sprang out of bed and hurried through breakfast.
"Here is your rice cake for the noon meal." Her mother reached for her book bag, and Mai Li quickly pulled it away.
"I'm still hungry, may I eat it on the way to school Mama?"
Her mother paused and looked at her daughter strangely, opening her mouth to form a question. Then she smiled and handed the cake to Mai Li.
"The Lord be with you Mai Li, have a good day!" She hugged her daughter and Mai Li skipped out the door.
"Bye Mama! Bye Papa!"
