I received from a cousin who lived far away,
A picture of a man in his hey day.
She said it was Granddaddy, but I couldn’t tell,
It didn’t much look like the one I knew well.
I didn’t recognize him, no not at all,
Though like my granddaddy, he was tall.
Dressed in suit of wool with cravat so fine,
With eyes of blue and nose aquiline.
An handsome man in his earlier years,
He liked to run track and hear the crowd cheer.
The man in the picture was said to be wild,
It wasn’t the Granddaddy I knew as a child.
The Granddaddy I knew had changed quite a bit,
From the man in the picture who was dapper and fit.
My granddaddy was gangly, nary a tooth in his head,
Not your typical granddad I once heard it said.
To many he wasn’t considered a prize,
But Granddaddy was special in my eyes.
Summer by summer he grew for me,
Cherry tomatoes, as sweet as could be.
With pot roast and gravy and fresh garden spuds,
Those cherry tomatoes sure pleased my taste buds.
We spent lots of time outside in the sun,
With Granddaddy thinking of ways to have fun.
He fitted a pole with string and fat meat,
Saying crawfish in the ditch would think it a treat.
He grinned as I squealed when a crawfish came my way,
Then sent him back home to live another day.
We fed the chickens and gathered the eggs,
And checked for the redbugs that clung to our legs.
His lawn was a carpet of lush St. Augustine,
Not a weed or a sticker could ever be seen.
In summer this grass was soft to my feet,
Walking barefoot there was a special treat.
A perfect place for cartwheels, backbends and such,
For Granddaddy, watching was never too much.
One day a ring from my finger flew into that grass,
I was sure that finding it would not come to pass.
On hands and knees Granddaddy searched diligently,
We both were happy when he found the ring for me.
The picture from my cousin I gaze at once again,
Trying vainly to imagine that it’s really him.
The Granddaddy in my heart is the one I like best,
So I put away the picture in my old oaken desk.
The ring on my finger still glows with golden shine,
As I sit and remember that Granddaddy of mine.
