From that time to this humanity has constantly sought ways to fulfill the emptiness created by this separation. Poems have been written since the beginning of time that speak of the desire to be loved by God and by each other. Songs focus on the life we want with God and the fulfillment we seek in search of Him. Books and movies provide an endless stream of stories based on the emptiness created by desire.
As Christians we have come to know that God is love and grace. His love is amazing and yet, we still hunger and thirst for fulfillment. Everything we say and do is filtered through this desire to be close to God. Our lives are defined by this relationship. Our hearts painfully crave time in God's embrace. Our words describe this emptiness with the phrases "I want" and "I need." Our relationship with God is defined by how we experience Him in our lives. In fact, it can be said that God is a creation of our own desires. At least that is how we see it. God has another plan.
His plan is to erase our burdens of guilt and sin that separate us from Him. Once this separation is gone He then takes up residence in our hearts. Our lives and our desires are no longer ours to own. They are His instead. The pain of desire is replaced with the glow of love for everyone we meet. The darkness of non-fulfillment and loneliness is replaced with hope and the light of His glory. He raises us up to walk into the world focused on His love instead of on empty desires. We are filled with wonder and desire simply disappears.
When this happens the directive from Jesus to humble ourselves and to follow becomes a lifestyle instead of an unachievable goal. Desire is a self-centered emptiness that can never be fulfilled. God takes our desire and fills it with a love that was never deserved but makes all things possible. When emptiness and darkness threatens to overwhelm us and when the tidal waves of pain and suffering sweep into our lives we need to seek only one thing and the desire that threatens is once more washed away. That one thing is the image of the Cross, a cross filled with the love of God and the memory that we will want for nothing as long as we keep Him in our sights.
