But, she did work at a local Beauty Shop and most of the time enjoyed helping others achieve a kind of external beauty, a beauty that last for only a few weeks but made them feel good for a short time. She also had a beautiful collie that adored her and saw nothing wrong with her. In Lady’s eyes she saw in her master nothing but love and caring. As much as she loved Lady, it just wasn’t enough. She needed something more…But what?
She was walking Lady one day at a nearby park when something unusual happened. She came upon a clearing in an overgrown area of trees and shrubs and saw something sticking out of the ground. As she walked closer to the object, a kind of brilliance began to illuminate. The light was almost blinding, she so stepped back, hoping to be able to see more clearly.
There on the ground was a beautiful gold crucifix. It looked strangely familiar. She bent down and picked it up. As she scrutinized the crucifix, she realized it was the very one she threw away a year ago, just days after her divorce from Kevin. Nothing mattered to her then; her faith in God was shattered, and a once happy marriage, over.
Strange, that she would find the cross! Almost like it was meant to be. She dusted off the crucifix and placed it in her jean’s pocket. She continued on with her walk and an hour later was home.
Upon arriving home, she took care of Lady’s needs and then went to the kitchen sink, pulled out the cross and began cleaning it off, gently and with care. She then placed the cross on top of her bedroom drawer and there it lay for several days—a remnant from the past.
It was on a Wednesday when she was combing out a customer’s hair, when something else wonderful happened. Around five, when everyone was finishing up their chores, in walked her former husband. He looked happy and wanted to speak with her.
They went to the back of the store and he began…
“Tonia, I know that I shouldn’t be here and I know our marriage is over but do you think that you could give me a second chance? I have a much better job now at the bank and I can take care of us both much better now…If you want, you could continue with this job or maybe go back to school? What do you say? Could we try once again? I still love you, Tonia. Do you think you could love me again?”
Tonia was tongue-tied. For the first time in her life she was speechless. She did still care about him, but did she love him? Then, she thought of the cross, finding it again and what the cross stood for--love, forgiveness, understanding and peace.
She didn’t have to think long before she gave an answer…
What do you suppose was her reply?
