They each have a bag and they're handing out poison candy. Their M & M's stand for Murder and Mayhem and boast a lovely, salty blood-like flavor. The licorice sticks are only for black people with a grudge against cops. And the candy bars are loaded with sugar for people who want free hand-outs from the government.
Sniffing and sneering, they toss them about. “Come all you young fools and worship the devil. He'll come and keep you snug and warm in the winter to come.”
Yes, it's satire in jest of Halloween but these are terrible times when the very air we breathe can put us in the grave and I certainly think Satan has a hand in it. He's the hairy monster among us causing covid-19, drug abuse, sex trafficking and every bad thing we can name. He's spreading fear and hate like poison but we don't have to let him get the upper hand.
Thousands of years ago God made a plan for rescuing humanity in times like the present. He made man in his image which means he gave us a creative mind, encouraging us to develop a rescue plan so small and simple it might be discounted by a prideful person by the name of Satan. It's called “the written word”. Once it was developed, he wrote his rules of conduct on a tablet of stone and gave them to a man called Moses. And those rules are as valid today as they ever were. When Jesus began his ministry in the desert, he showed us how to use them to defeat the devil. In Matthew 4:4 we read, “It is written: Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (NIV)
And then in Matthew 4:7 “It is also written: “Do not put the lord your God to the test”, followed in Matthew 4:16 with: “Away from me, Satan! It is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (NIV)
Following the example of Jesus, I have used these words often to defeat the monsters of fear, failure, sickness, persecution and temptation that crop up ever so often in my life and probably that of every other person alive. In days like these, I have adopted another favorite, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him...There is no fear in love. But perfect love casts out fear. Because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:16-18) Repeating this frequently brings me a feeling of calm and peace. Because I'm part Jewish, I end this with Shalom.
So take heart little flock, Jesus has overcome the world. The Father is opening a large black hole in the sky and will someday get a grip on those monsters and toss them into that place where they can never return.
