My husband was working late that night and my sons were asleep in their rooms: five-year-old Danny and fun-loving Eddie who, at one and a half, was a whirlwind of trouble. They were a handful but I still looked forward to holding their little brother Phillip. Cradling an infant in my arms was my greatest delight. But something was wrong with the pregnancy and I'd already had a threatened miscarriage. Now the abdominal pains were back and I was anxious for I was only six months along.
Then I began to hemorrhage and fear took over me. I prayed for my husband to return soon but it seemed like hours before he arrived. When he came through the door he took one look at my ashen face and sprang into action. After calling a neighbor to look after the boys, he half carried me to the car and sped to the hospital where I was soon prepared for surgery. The baby was taken by C Section and I awoke the next morning with news that little Phil would not survive. How my arms ached to hold him but I was too weak to move!
In the years that followed, he was often in my thoughts and I wondered if he was up there in Heaven where I wanted him to be. Was he a living, growing little boy being cared for by angels or had he simply ceased to exist? For years I prayed about it until one day, reading my Bible, I was reassured by the words of Jesus in Matthew 19:14: “Let the little children come to me and don't forbid them for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.” My eyes were opened and I realized infants and little children were the only group assured of salvation, even the unborn.
A great many years went by where I never knew my son. And then one night everything changed! I had a dream where I was walking in a forest with my only daughter Michelle, born five years after Phillip, and we came upon a large building. We were thirsty so I told Michelle I would use the massive door knocker to assault that door and ask for a drink of water. When I did, the door was opened by a young man in a white robe looking very much like my son Daniel. “Dan” I said in wonder, but he shook his head.
“No, I'm Phillip,” he said with a smile, “and you must be my mother.” He put his arm around me and took me on a tour of the building. It was a grand cathedral, the walls hung with tapestries in marvelous colors, and music that sounded very much like chimes and beautiful beyond description. All around us were people walking in robes of white or dark colors.
Phillip took me on a tour of the cathedral until we came upon the rear of the building. There was no wall on the far side and it was open to a scene of midnight blue sky aglow with stars. A river flowed by and on the other side a man stood, waving his arms for attention. Phillip said, “excuse me but I must do my job.” He walked across the water then, just like Jesus. Taking the waver by the arms, my son walked him across the water and into the building beside me.
The next part of the dream found me seated at a very long table in a robe like the others and we were being served a meal by angels. It began with a scrumptious white soup eaten with a spoon of gold. Unfortunately, the dream ended there. But now I know for sure we have a very compassionate God who knows our heart and uses dreams to reassure us of His love.
