I have a lovely daughter who lost her father at the age of three. Because I was a single mom who had to work full-time, I wasn't always there to help her through the hard times. For this reason, perhaps, she has a type A personality, always busy at something and successful at whatever she does. She married a guy named Jim who is her exact opposite: an optimistic, easy-going kind of guy who isn't in a hurry to get things done. But Jim is a treasure!
Jim is the kind of guy who has a smile on his face for everyone. Of medium height, he has sandy hair worn short and eyes that are green and twinkling. There's a dimple in his chin and a smile that would dazzle the most determined old grouch around. So what would it take to put an end all this non-stop vision of charm? You guessed it! The name is corona virus.
The doctors couldn't diagnose it at first. He entered the hospital thinking he had a cold turned into pneumonia and for several days they all assumed it was. But his condition got worse and they soon had him on a ventilator. Now let me explain that the hospital hadn't admitted any confirmed covid-19 cases yet so the doctors were totally unfamiliar with the symptoms. They were deeply puzzled. They decided to perform a procedure going into one of his lungs to discover the problem but the lung collapsed when they entered. Thus, they had to repair it. Jim continued this way for about three weeks with the doctors never coming up with a diagnoses.
His lung collapsed two more times and his condition worsened. The second time his lung collapsed, they induced him into a coma while they operated and he remained in a coma for about a week. In the meantime, family, friends and co-workers engaged in prayer for Jim and there was always someone praying.
For myself, it was a time when the sun seemed to go behind a cloud and remain there. Absent minded, I moved through the day, concerned for my daughter and how she would hold up were her husband to pass away. Knowing that people throughout the world were suffering from the same disease didn't help to improve my mood and I prayed for them also. In my dreams, darkness covered the earth and people walked around in masks. When I prayed, Jim's face swam before me and a shadow passed over it, darkening his smile.
Finally came good news! My son-in-law left the hospital, equipped with oxygen but on the mend. His lungs still hurt and his heart had problems. But now, of course, we all rejoiced. He would get better. But we weren't prepared for the final outcome. Four months after leaving the hospital, he saw his doctor again for X-rays and the doctor came back smiling. “Do you believe in miracles?” The x-rays showed his lungs were completely clean and his heart was normal.
Jim is now a walking miracle and his face shines once more with that beautiful smile. I trust God that no shadow will ever darken that sweet face again! But I won't leave it at that. The world needs more miracles. Please, Lord, bring them on!
