The following day I stood in a short queue to speak to him and hand him the gift we’d brought. He was seated in the front row of a small conference room where he would be the guest speaker. The morning session was about to begin and though I wondered if I were being a bit rude to interrupt his quiet moments just before his presentation, I didn’t know when I’d have another opportunity to meet him. As I waited, I watched as each person in front of me took their turn to speak to him. He seemed so unhurried and unconscious of the noise and bustle surrounding him and seemed so attentive to each one, engaging with them fully in the conversation.
When my turn came, I shyly handed him the small package and explained the reason for the gift. Though the room was full of chatter and commotion I heard his heart listening to me, paying careful attention to everything I said. I had meant to honor him, but he had honored me instead, giving me the gift of his presence.
A few days later my friend and I received a thank you letter for our gift. Again, I felt the same gentle spirit in his friendly letter that I’d felt when I’d met him. He told us about his travels and ended with a request for prayer for his ministry.
On another occasion at a prayer breakfast, featuring him as the main speaker, many were approaching him before the meeting started. I entered the line when a woman regretfully informed me that the meeting was about to begin, and he would not be able to talk to me. As I walked away, I glanced at him and saw him watching me. In such a seemingly insignificant moment, there was something in his look that spoke of his awareness and compassion for a stranger who had sought to speak with him.
On another occasion, I sat and listened as he spoke about Jesus. Silently, tears streamed down my cheeks, not at his words, but at the Holy Spirit speaking to me through his words.
Over the years, I have met and talked with him now several times and each time I noticed the same gift of his presence at my presence. Each time he seemed unaware of all distractions while he focused on our conversation. And each time I felt no more special than anyone else, nor less, but honored.
How beautiful that God can use our lives to let Jesus shine through us in a love for mankind that touches hearts. That Ravi walked with Jesus was clear to me, because after each conversation I had with him I walked away with a deeper hunger to know more about Jesus!
Though he traveled great distances for much of the year and met the famous and the common man, I believe he never traveled without his Lord and that they met each soul together. It has been my passion that I too will let Jesus shine through me so that after each encounter with another, I’ve left them longing for more of my dearest companion, Jesus Christ.
