“How many times do I have to tell you to call me Sam? I feel like you are one of my sons. Actually, you are closer than my two sons. They never come to see me. They are just too busy.” His sons paid for John to come in and help with anything Sam needed, but it wasn’t the same.
“I’m honored to be here with you, Sam,” John replied with a smile. “How are you doing today?”
“I don’t know. I guess I’m alright.”
John could tell Sam was pondering something. Sam was as sharp as a tack, so even though he couldn’t get around as well, his mind was clear and concise. “Anything you want to talk about?”
“John, I have lived my life to the fullest. I’ve made a fortune, traveled the world, and obtained everything my heart desired. I feel like my life is a puzzle, but there is a piece missing. I just can’t put my finger on it. It doesn’t seem like anything could fill this hole. What do you think I am missing? You seem to enjoy your life. What do you have that I don’t?” Sam always enjoyed how upbeat John was.
John knew exactly what was missing in Sam’s life. “I used to feel the same way you do,” John said. “I tried everything to fill that hole in my life; drugs, alcohol, women and everything I could think of.”
“Really?” Sam asked surprised. “I would never have thought that about you. You seem to have your life all together, and you just turned 25 last month!” Sam looked up at John and asked, “How did you do it?”
“I found what was missing by turning to God.”
“You did? How?” Sam was surprised at his young friend’s story.
“I went to rehab where someone told me about Jesus who loved me and would forgive all my sins. He said Jesus died to save me from eternal death. He explained I needed to repent of my sins and ask Jesus into my life. From that day on my life changed. I got clean and sober, and now I am living my life for Him.” John loved sharing his testimony with others. “When I accepted Jesus as my Savior, I finally felt that missing piece in my life come together. For the first time I felt complete.”
Sam looked at John with surprise in his eyes. “Is that all you had to do? You heard about this Jesus person and you felt complete?” Sam was a little skeptical. How had he gone his entire 75 years without knowing about this?
John smiled. “Yes, it was that simple. Jesus was God’s Son who chose to die on a cross, taking everyone’s sins, even yours and mine. He did this so that we would ask Him to be our Lord and put our trust in Him. He loves you and wants to have a personal relationship with you, Sam, no matter what you have done in the past. All you have to do is ask Him.”
Sam was quiet for awhile. Finally he asked, “How can I have a relationship with Him the way you do?”
“It’s really not hard. I can guide into the way to make Him Lord of your life right now, if you are willing.”
“You can do that right here, right now?” Sam asked a little surprised. “What do I have to do?”
John told Sam everything he needed to do, and Sam accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. In only a short time they were done. John looked his friend who had tears streaming down his face.
“I feel free and whole.” Sam looked at John with a joy in his eyes that John had never seen before. “I found my missing puzzle piece. Thank you so much.”
The two went on talking about what had just happened and how to continue and grow in Sam’s new found relationship with God. John was so excited for his friend, and Sam was so glad he finally felt complete.
