Katie OMalley sighed as she tiptoed down the steps of the old row house. She shushed the back door and rushed up the alley to Cypress St. The city lights had blinked off, and the sky was promisingjust what she wasnt sure.
Jimmie yawned as he turned on the fluorescent lights. The Diner was empty but not for long. He had coffee to make and lots of it.
Katie tugged on the heavy silver-handled doors. She was late, and most of the red and black vinyl booths were already taken. So, she slid into the booth in the back, snapped open her purse, and pulled out a lipstick.
Bubblegum Pink, thats odd. I distinctly remember taking Red Poppy.
Morning, Miss, Jimmie said as he rushed over to greet her, nearly tripping over that annoying crack in the floor. What can I get you?
Coffeeblackand Im in a hurry, Katie said as she pouted her lips.
Hmmmmmmmm, in need of a little more grace, this one.
Oh nothing, Miss, be right backwith your coffee!
When Katie finished her coffee, she reached into her purse. The tickets, at least she had those. A change of scenery is exactly what she needed.
You can run, but you cant hide!
What did you say?
Its a beautiful day outside! Look at the sky; its pink like cotton candy! Promising, dont you think?
Katie squinted and gave him a hard stare.
Another cup of coffee? Jimmie smiled.
I think Ill take my check now.
Just one more little cup?
Katie frowned as she twisted a lock of her unruly red hair around her fingers. She was considering the possibility that the sky could ever be anything but grey. It certainly never had been before.
Just because something never had been, does not mean that it never could be! Perhaps, you just need to notice it!
Katie shook her head. Okay, Im feeling a little odd today.
Perfect then! Jimmie said as he stuttered off into the kitchen.
Katie leaned back in her red vinyl seat. She had finished two more cups of coffee and a jelly donut by then and was feeling quite happy and light. For the first time in a very long time, Katie started to sing very softly, of course.
Your first pink sky! Jimmie said, How do you like it?
Its beautiful, but how did you do it?
Oh, someone much bigger than me is in charge of that! I just serve the coffee!
I was meaning to ask you about that, Katie said.
Oh, the third cup always does the trick!
Before Katie could ask what he meant, Jimmie was already gone. He had a lot to do before he left, there were tables to clear and dishes to wash. And heaven forbid hed forget the coffee or that annoying crack in the floor. It wouldnt do to show up to his next assignment with a broken wing.
