I frantically called my husband, Bob. With his job, he can be anywhere within about a sixty mile radius at any given time. When I called, he was having lunch literally seconds from where I was—seconds!!! I needed help right that minute and God provided Bob right that minute.
I roared into the parking lot of the restaurant, Bob strolled out, noticed my muffler dragging behind me, went back into the restaurant, grabbed a steak knife, sawed off the muffler off and tossed it into the back of my van.
I roared off (dragster style) with my eyes filled with tears of awe and gratitude. The whole "fix" had delayed me less than three minutes.
The reason I knew Bob was only seconds away was because he told me he was at a restaurant right across the street from a familiar landmark, a landmark my family had dubbed “Jeff’s Big Wart on Display†many years ago. In fact I could see it as I spoke to him.
When we were little, my older brother, Jeff, grew a giant wart on his finger. No amount of Compound W appeared to be able to diminish the size or staunch the growth of it. He had me and my little brother, Craig, convinced it was contagious and in unsuspecting moments would torment us by pressing that gruesome thing against our exposed skin. I was terrified it was only a matter of time before I sprouted my own big wart.
On our way home from church one Sunday, Craig pointed to this giant whitish ball, propped up high on iron scaffolding, and exclaimed, “Look! There's Jeff’s big wart on display.â€
Of course, we all found this uproariously funny and from that day forward, we never drove by it without acknowledging it as “Jeff's Big Wart on Display.†To this day, I have no idea what this odd structure is or what purpose it serves.
Decades later, I still can't resist pointing out Jeff's Big Wart on Display every single time we happen to be driving by it. Who knew God would use the wart landmark to show me exactly where Bob was at exactly the time I needed him? And even gave me one more reason to be thankful—I never did sprout my own nasty wart.
“…with God all things are possible.†(Matthew 19:26)
