On the verge of tears, Wanda-Bea Whale whined to her friend, Saraphina Sea Lion. “I’m soooo huunngrrryyy. I’ve had nothing to eat today, and I’m tired. And I gained 20 pounds. I just don’t know why I can’t lose weight!” Wanda-Bea paused her sniveling to allow a school of krill to enter her belly. “I wanna be like you, Saraphina!”
The sea lion had been successful in her own weight loss, and now had a svelte body due to her efforts in controlling food portions and exercising.
Later that week, Wanda-Bea was enjoying a double serving of plankton, when the village bad boy, Beezle-Bob Barracuda, swam up. She knew it unwise to hang around him, but truly enjoyed his attention.
“Hey there, Wanda-Bea,” he called out in his deep sensuous voice. “Wanna join me for lunch?”
Wanda-Bea was thrilled but then remembered that she’d already eaten. “Well, I did just eat, but…”
“Sweetheart, surely you must have room for dessert?” With a wink and a slow wave of his fin, Beezle-Bob Barracuda gestured her towards him. “Come; come with me!”
“Why yes, yes I will go with you!” Wanda-Bea disregarded that inner prodding of her conscious, and swam away with the sweet-talking barracuda.
Arriving at the Bountiful Buffet Bar, Wanda-Bea was overwhelmed with the wondrous choices: grouper, snapper, tuna, mullet, herring, and even anchovies. Wanda-Bea ate till she was so full her leaden body sank to the ocean floor.
The day before her meeting, Wanda-Bea realized that she’d forsaken her plan to diet and exercise, so all that day she swam laps and only ate plankton. She felt famished, but was determined to lose weight.
Saraphina sadly shook her head at her friend’s foolishness and begged her to be more sensible. “Wanda-Bea, you’re going to kill yourself with this nonsense!” The whale ignored the slim sea lion.
First thing the next morning, Wanda-Bea raced and leapt through the ocean for miles and miles. She was exhausted and hungry, but would not allow herself to eat because she had to weigh-in that night.
After slipping off the scales at the meeting, Wanda-Bea wailed. “I gained 50 pounds? But I dieted and exercised so hard!”
Saraphina sagely responded: “Well, what did you expect? You pigged-out all week, dieted one day and starved another day. Sensible weight control does not work that way.”
Wanda-Bea hung her head in shame. “You’re so right. I got what I deserved.”
Not only was she very hungry, the whale felt disgusted with herself. As she slowly swam away, distracted by her self-recrimination, Wanda-Bea bumped into Beezle-Bob. “Excuse me.” She said in a disheartened voice.
The barracuda sensed her vulnerable mood and knew he could get what he wanted from her. In a gravelly voice, he said “Let’s go eat something, perhaps just dessert?”
Wanda-Bea stared in disbelief at the barracuda. “My diet starts today!”
And in one swift motion, she ate him.
“We both got what we deserved.”
“Food gained by fraud taste sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel.“ Proverbs 20:17
