Moses was swathed in perspiration. A black film of pesky flies swarmed around him and his comrades, Aaron and Hur. Swishing them aside for the umpteenth time, Moses commanded,"And again." Immediately the men lifted Moses’ arms, stretching them widely so that he looked like a powerful eagle extending its majestic wings upwards and outwards towards the ball of burning sun.
With his head thrust back he shouted, "Now watch them fall!" And instantly the Amelekite front line stumbled in the valley below the onlookers, and the ranks behind followed their example.
"It’s almost as if a mystical force has caused them to trip over their own feet" said Hur in astonishment.
"And look how the Israelites swoop down upon them, to toss their prey aside with no effort at all" declared Aaron with wonder.
And as long as they held Moses arms up with an attitude of fervent supplication, the tide of battle favored the Israelites, but each time Moses arms screamed out in pain and he was forced to lower them, the Amelekites took the lead in battle.
With the encouragement and support of his close comrades, Moses was resolved to see the Israelites victorious in battle. Because Aaron and Hur were determined to hold up their leader’s arms, they continued to steady Moses’ extended limbs until the sun set that day. And so Joshua and the Israelites defeated Amalek with the edge of the sword and without exercising any pity.
None of us can succeed on our own. As important a leader as Moses was, he was still a man who needed help. Part of our success on the spiritual journey is recognizing our limitations and seeking the support of others who can work alongside us; no matter who we are or what position we hold. Truly spiritual persons seek others in order to seek victory.
The encouragement and support of other Aarons and Hurs in our life, ensures that the things that need to be done for the good of all are indeed done. It takes the collaboration of dedicated people to see our enemies fall; the unity of persevering people to see the Kingdom of God extended; the focus of faithful people to see the glory of God revealed in the midst of mess; and a persistent people to see the race won and the prize of victory claimed as their own.
