I saw where he was on the news, and ran there at superspeed, planning to come at him from behind and take him down before he could see me and steal my speed. Unfortunately, the room in which he held his hostages had a wall sized mirror. He smirked and shouted, “Speedster! How lovely to see you!”
Without turning, he thrust his hands behind him. I saw glowing crystals on his gloves. As I closed in, he boasted, “Now you will race out of control!”
I felt myself speeding up, and the world went crazy. When my head cleared, I saw a newsstand with papers dated April 17, 2007! I raced away from the newsstand so fast that no one should have been able to catch up to me. An instant later, I felt a hand clutching my arm and a baritone voice I hadn’t heard in almost nine years said, “Alright, whoever you are, stop and tell me who you are.”
I managed to pull us into an alley by a local diner, and slowed down enough to see it was, indeed, my father. I said the first thing that popped into my head. “Dad? But...”
He reached out, removed my mask, and stared dumbfounded at my face. “Belinda? What are you doing in my costume?”
I realized what Drainer had meant when he said I’d race out of control. I ended up moving so fast I traveled back through time.
“Dad,” I began, “there’s so much...”
He cut me off with a raised hand, smiled back at me and said, “Don’t change the future, or at least mine. I already see you’ve taken on my role as Speedster. I don’t need to know anything else about my future… your past. In the book of Job it tells us that God has all our days numbered out in advance, and while we have free will, I don’t want to know anything that would interfere with His divine plan for my life.”
I was shocked, since Mom had once told me that Dad was not a religious man. Where did this Bible proficiency come from?
Noticing the look on my face, and interpreting it correctly, he asked, “Surprised that I know the Bible?” At my sheepish nod, he continued, “I thought about getting back together with your mom and thought that if I were literate in the Bible she might have an interest in restarting our relationship. Not a good reason for memorizing the Bible in sixty seconds, but...”
“So I don’t tell you how you die, but can we use our powers to get me home?”
Dad shook his head and let out a long whistle, “You traveled to the past and had no plan to get back? Guess this wasn’t your idea, Belinda.”
I explained as quickly as I could about my latest encounter with Drainer, and he shook his head again, “He’s improved his tech since I fought him last week. He had something on his hands that increased your speed? Then all we need to do is have you move at that same speed and hopefully you can return to your home time. I have an idea...”
Before he could explain, both our cowl radios went off, warning about a crime being committed by the Jester, one of Dad’s oldest enemies, who I took out of action over a year ago. We shared a look that indicated that we had the same idea. Two Speedsters would put him away twice as fast. He prompted, “Race home and change into your training suit.”
An instant later, I was standing in front of him in the green and white costume I wore when he was training me to use my powers. I knew I’d have to return it before returning to my time, but it felt nostalgic to be working with my dad in this suit again. We foiled Jester’s robbery, and left him restrained and unarmed for Dad’s fellow officers.
After I changed back to my usual costume, Dad explained his idea. Running together, we would combine our speed to launch me back to the future. As I am now back where I belong, it worked, and I moved at such speed that Drainer didn't even have a chance to use his crystal gloves to zap me back into the past again.
Author’s note: Belinda’s dad was referring to Job 14:5
