“Gran, I do look after myself. I eat more vegetables than anything else and I exercise every day. What more can I do?”
My heart pounded as I looked at my beautiful girl, knowing that her beauty was fading and that she had been caught in one of the two extremes of modern adolescent pressure. One friend had died of anorexia and another had grown distressingly obese. She tried to keep a middle path but was losing the battle. Spending more time with Patricia was placing her under an obligation to join her in snacking. This brought her to the other risk of bulimia as she attempted to overcompensate and either skipped meals or made herself vomit.
“My darling, there is a way that seems right to you, but it does more harm than good.”
“What can be wrong, Gran? You are always preaching about my body being a temple, and I think about that. I wouldn’t smoke or drink alcohol in church so I don’t smoke or drink to spoil my body.”
I couldn’t help but repress a smile. She would look well on the catwalk, modelling some slinky dress of high fashion. But with her present situation of risky dieting, that can’t happen. Those shoulder blades will look more like chicken wings and her legs will shrink through lack of muscle despite her exercise. The cheekbones will gain prominence and the eyes become large and vacant. Her hair will lose its gloss and become dull, lifeless, while her glistening teeth may be prone to cavities. Why am I so negative? Perhaps it’s because I have seen so many disasters in teenager’s mind-sets. Maybe it’s the feline instinct of self-preservation coming out in me but my main concern is a grand-daughter in danger. I pray that foolishness of youth will be over-ridden by wisdom of grey hair and experience.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God. You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So honour God in your body.
1 Timothy 4:8 For physical training is of some value but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.
Daily I see the dangers in modern living over-riding the Word of God intended as the blueprint for our lives.
