A hug and kiss for the wife, and then he joined the group of men that would be his travel companions. They gathered in a circle, bowed their heads and asked for God’s protection as they headed out.
The highway was his playground.
It was difficult for him to agree to go to the doctor. He had always been like the Energizer Bunny. But his wife wouldn’t leave him alone about the lump that seemed to be growing on the side of his neck.
A visit to the doctor … a discovery that the lump was called a lymph node … and the fact that it was changing size required a biopsy.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was the diagnosis.
Surgical removal was the next step, followed by chemo and radiation. With each treatment he lost a little more of his vitality. After dropping his motorcycle several times, he realized he would have to abandon that life-long love. Even though he could still ride it, he no longer had the strength to hold it up.
Then came the day he needed a cane to help him walk. That didn’t last long. Soon he was traversing with the help of a walker. After a few months, the wheelchair became his mode of transportation.
He was wasting away.
As his body deteriorated, those same men with whom he had traveled the highways became his daily inspiration. Their tall tales brought a smile to his lips.
As he wasted away, they helped him reach the end of his journey.
