“What have I gotten myself into?” she thought. “This sounds more like noise than worship.”
Soon there was clapping. A few dancing. She became more and more uncomfortable.
Relieved that it was time for the sermon, she gratefully opened her Bible. Her inner thoughts were in turmoil. “Was I supposed to enjoy that?”
Soon her mind was enveloped with the soothing words and new understanding of the Bible. But she longed for some quiet worship time.
As she walked up the aisle to leave after the service, a fellow worshipper fell in beside her.
“Wasn’t that great? We finally had some music with pep and enthusiasm. I thought it was wonderful.”
She wasn’t sure how to respond. It was hard to understand how that noise up there on the platform could be called wonderful.
“It was a little loud for me.”
“Get some earplugs. Hopefully this is starting a new trend.” And they were off to share with someone else just how enjoyable the music had been.
Another fellow worshipper came alongside.
“How are you? Did you survive the music? I’m not sure how that can be called worship. I need softer sounds that allow me to think about the words and actually feel like I’m worshipping God.”
A scripture had come to mind as she walked. A scripture that could be interpreted many ways. Maybe what had occurred on the platform was indeed a joyful noise to the Lord.
But hopefully her kind of joyful noise would happen next Sunday.
“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!” Psalm 100:1 (ESV)
