In 28AD, the Galilean sun shone briefly through the small window of Imma's dwelling. She slowly opened her eyes. Another stressful, lonely day worrying about her future! She was so tired!
“Why go on? It might be easier to end it all!”
Remembering her former comfortable home where friends had gathered and filled the rooms with laughter, she looked around and cursed her condition. She was now forced to live in a virtual cave with only bare necessities. At the back, raised slightly off the earthen floor, was a straw mattress. Nearby, a hook for her few clothes. Just inside the entry stood a small table, a jug, a basin and a chair. A worn brown patterned rug covered the entrance.
She had been 'unclean' for so long. So much money had been spent on doctors and treatment but to no avail. A cure seemed impossible. The 'Laws of Impurities' decreed that as long as she had an issue of blood she must be separated. If anyone touched her, or any of her possessions, they too were declared unclean. Her friends had deserted her, people avoided her wherever she went. Kind shopkeepers left unsold produce for her to pick up after closing - so she survived. However, no one had touched her for 12 years.
With a shawl around her shoulders Imma picked up the jug and set off for the daily trip fill it. Living on the outskirts of town it took a while to reach the well giving her time to think.
“I will make this jug of water my last. I can no longer stand the stress and tiredness. I am continually shunned wherever I go and have no hope of a cure. I will cut my wrists and let my blood be my killer not just my sickness!”
Imma had made her decision and hurried to the well, barely noticing people moving away from her on the track. Being so focused on her task she was unaware of the swelling numbers in the area. After those already at the well had finished, she filled her jug, and noticed a huge crowd gathering on a nearby slope.
Suddenly a man burst through the throng, laughing and shouting
“I am healed. Jesus healed me. Its a miracle I can see!”
He danced round and round the well and then back down the path to the town, all the time joyously declaring his healing .
Imma remembered recently overhearing snatches of conversation as she walked to the well.
“Have you heard how the leper was healed by Jesus?”
“Yes, and Jesus drove out demons from so and so!”
“They say He is a miracle worker this Jesus!”
Suddenly it struck Imma
“Could this be a chance? If He gave that man his sight surely He can heal me. He can not touch me but I can touch his cloak so He is not aware of me.”
Moving forward, keeping her head covered to prevent recognition she squeezed through the crowd, all the time her belief was strangely growing stronger. Everyone was so intent on getting closer to Jesus they paid no attention to her. Eventually she managed to see where He was. Thankfully she was behind Him, so He wouldn't notice her. By now she was even more convinced Jesus could heal her.
Down on her knees she reached out between the pairs of legs in front of her and managed to touch the edge of his clothing.
Instantly she felt a wave of warmth through her body and she knew a healing had taken place. The flow had stopped.
“Who touched me?”
She heard Jesus ask.
His disciples answered
“There are so many people here Master how can we possible know?”
Jesus turned around. His eyes met Imma's
Trembling Imma came and fell at His feet, telling what had happened.
Jesus smiled
“Go in peace! Your faith has made you well!”
We all long to “go in peace and be made well” especially in today's stressful world. Imma suffered for 12 years from a sickness that was cured instantaneously.
We can all suffer for many years, weeks or a few days with 'sickness' which may be physical or mental. It may be behaviour that is sinful, or disobedient. Jesus has the answer for Uall our diseases. Ask for the perseverence and faith of Imma, receive a touch from Jesus
and you too will be able to 'Go in Peace!”
