I am with my church family. I am among those who share a common belief that we are one in Jesus Christ. Yet, the family is so very diverse; just as God desired. The call is to all who will come and thankfully some from so many different tribes have answered that call. The assembly is a declaration to the world that our God is Lord over all things and all people. We stand unique in a world that so often chooses to segregate, that our God is not preferential to any particular ethnic group. I agree in my spirit, but my soul is sometimes challenged to deal with the implications.
The truth is that I see many that look like me on the outside, but whose life history is unlike anything that I have experienced. I feel unable at times to step into the interests of those around me. I find myself wanting to be somewhere else doing that which interests and excites me. Much that catches my interest is solitary in nature and differs significantly from those who are my brothers and sisters. I sometimes find their interests dull and uninteresting and I struggle to show real attention. I don't blame them, but my mind does often wander off to anything else but this.
The gathering of the people of faith should be the capstone of my life and at times it is. But at times I struggle with the everyday interaction between those different from me. I can easily lose interest, but still I struggle to stay the course. I trust that the God who made an infinite variety of people can help me to look beyond the surface and see that which binds us all. A small struggle with boredom is worth the price of gaining a real relationship with a brother or sister in Christ. I am willing to pay the price and see the kingdom of God advance in the world.
