Ahead of them was about ten brightly coloured wagons and he took up the rear of the wagon train along this minor road that would eventually lead into the town.
This was his second season with this circus and he loved every day of it.
Unknown to him, his life was about to change radically.
“Hey Josh” yelled Mo, the leader of the train “I want to talk to you about learning to do the trapeze act.”
He felt the cold hand of fear on his back and feet and he began to tremble.
“Arrrrgh” he stuttered “I will let you know Mo".
“Why?” queried Mo “This is an increase in pay and stardom at last! Since you joined the team I noticed how well you do the manoeuvres.”
In haste, Joshua galloped away. He needed to be alone to hide what he was really feeling. He was terrified of the thoughts that were screaming into his mind from the past. He was shaking.
In a circus about five years ago, he was in a trapeze act
and there was a terrible personal tragedy that he never shared with anyone.
Over time he hid it well, but now….
Mo found him at the next rest spot.
“Well Josh,” he queried using his pet name “We need you. You have the right build for this.”
What Joshua could not tell him was that he used to be a trapeze artist. In fact, his family were trapezists and he learned the craft from his youth. The death of his mother years ago traumatised him far more than he ever admitted.
His father, mother and him were a well know team until the day he dropped her. Even with the net to catch her she was hurt and never recovered. He had disappeared from home and was in hiding but today Mo’s question woke him up and he began to wonder what his father was up to. “Was he still alive?” he wondered.
He returned to the travellers' group and when they arrived at the next town he called home. Imagine his shock when his mother answered the phone. He slammed the phone down in shock.
Later he made another call. This time he did not slam the phone down.
His joy returned. His mother had not died as he supposed. Pop told him, “The day you left home, Pastor and the elders came to the hospital and prayed over her, and yes, you guessed right, she was healed!”
“Come home Son,” pleaded Pop.
And he did!
The skeleton hiding in his closet had been exposed and annihilated. He was able to return home and to trapezing. He also rededicated his life to the Lord.
