Pierce the solemn mantle of night,
So I may gaze your smile again
I dare not trust the faithless moon,
Or wayward stars that hide and play
Only you remain fixed and true.
Lead the way as I follow you,
Constant and calm unfailing light,
A burning lamp unto my feet;
When my mind drifts like aimless clouds,
My inner compass brings me back
To precious liberty and Him.
Sheltered in murky caves by day,
Creeping through forests dim by night,
Guardian rays, the only hope
For finding freedom’s hallowed light
Slavery’s shadows stayed hidden,
Till the Red Sea again did part.
The Magi’s convoy from the East
Beheld Bethlehem’s shining star,
They chased as it went before them,
Their arduous journey so long
The light stopped above the child’s home,
Inside, the Hope of Israel.
Star of the slave, sign of the King
Bringing deliverance to all,
No longer encumbered or chained,
Your love and truth has set us free,
Help us not turn our backs away,
But to only depend on thee.
Oh, North Star! you appear to me
To blaze before God’s holy throne,
Glory falls from the Heavenlies,
Forever declaring the way
Wise are we who stick to your path,
And trust your steady light alone.
Some people thought that the North Star was the same as the Star of Bethlehem. Most scholars dispute that theory today.
