The Annual Christmas Assembly always drew the largest crowd out of all of the assemblies held during the year, and this one was no exception. It appeared as if every student in the high school had shown up for the grand event, eagerly awaiting the presentation put on by the school gymnastic team.
About a month before that day, the coach had asked me, "How would you like to do the floor exercise at the Christmas assembly this year?"
My eyes must have bulged when I answered her. "REALLY? ME? YOU SURE?" I'll never forget her smiling eyes as I floated off to my next class.
In the following days, I spent all my waking hours obsessively creating choreography to the upbeat tune of Yankee-Doodle-Dandy.
When the day arrived, I was well rehearsed as I stepped out onto the center of the vast blue carpet to begin my routine. I held my breath and focused down at the floor.
As the lively music began, I lifted my head and stepped forward, and then turned full circle in an arabesque, one arm reaching ahead of me, and the other behind.
Then I marched while opening my arms up and out to each side. A sense of grandeur filled my chest. Coming to the corner of the mat, I turned to face the other far corner, and took a deep breath.
The next note of music was my cue.
I began to sprint with determination across the floor. Halfway to the other side, I placed my hands on the floor as my feet flew up and over my head, rotating half circle in the air. When my feet touched the floor, I was facing the opposite direction. Immediately, I sprang up as momentum carried me backwards. Turning flip-flops, to my hands, feet, hands, feet, hands, feet, ending in a lunge with a pose.
The music carried me on from there with skips and leaps high off the floor where I hung effortlessly in mid air. As if an invisible hand carried me, I floated through aerial walk over's, cartwheels, and butterflies with hands never touching the ground.
When my feet landed, I danced with expression that told a story of a girl whose dream was coming true.
The room burst with applause as I struck the last pose. It was like the sound of an ocean in my ears as I jogged off to the side of the mat. Then I turned around to see something I never expected, and it took my breath away. Everyone in the room was standing, clapping, and cheering in joyful ovation.
A warmth swept over me and I could barely catch my breath. The memory overwhelms me still to this day.
God had filled the gymnasium with His amazing love and allowed me to experience a joy beyond my imagination. By God's grace I received the acceptance and encouragement of my fellow classmates that lifted me up. Perhaps it was a foretaste of heaven, where everyone will be received with nothing but praise and adoration, a place where dreams come true.
I believe that God really does give us wings to fly.
