Tastefully decorated in stylish tones of black, white and grey, the current owners had been meticulous caretakers of this well-appointed room for 14 years. Contemporary artworks adorned the freshly-painted walls and modern water features had been installed. The owners felt confident their venue could easily match other more recent installations in the neighbourhood.
The relatively small arena boasted great acoustics. It provided the perfect stage for players to engage in real-life emotional dramas, vocal masterpieces and side-splitting comedy. The owners had recently entrusted it to a youthful duo with what they considered profitable success.
The players’ names were Nick and Ryan. Nick had first been invited to the venue for solo performances. After two years, the owners decided to risk adding complexity to the routine. They warmly invited Ryan into the fold.
It hadn’t taken Nick and Ryan long to form a brotherly bond, with all the good (and bad) this kind of relationship entails. Sometimes there existed tension and friction between them, but generally their mutual understanding brought a spontaneity which kept their audience well-entertained.
Together they had been conducting both matinée and evening routines here for 8 years now. They were good mates and looked set to be so far into the future. The owners felt as if they’d struck gold. They often told Nick and Ryan how extraordinary it was to have been gifted with such a talented duo.
This evening’s routine looked set to be successful. Nick and Ryan had entered the arena focused and ready. Wardrobe had dressed them in matching costumes. They were both wearing blue t-shirts with the words “Made for Mischief” written in large white letters across their chests.
An air of suspense filled the room. What would tonight’s performance bring? Would the owners sneak into the back of the room to keep a watchful eye over proceedings?
Although the owners had enough wisdom to leave the pair to get on with things in their own uniquely imaginative way, they didn’t always see eye to eye in terms of humour. Occasionally the owners liked to encourage these young fellows to pursue more mature avenues in their creativity, much as a mentor might encourage a protégé.
Together Nick and Ryan picked up their instruments in their left hands and surveyed their audience. It was youthful and vibrant; the audience they both loved playing to most. Smiling in their ever-charming and endearing way, Nick and Ryan immediately found their audience smiling back at them, mirroring the enthusiasm the youngsters felt to get tonight’s routine underway.
Reaching forward with their right hands in unison, the routine began. They simultaneously took hold of a white tube. It looked to be some kind of paste. Nick’s hand firmly grasped the top of the tube near the lid. Ryan’s hand was white-knuckled around the bottom.
They turned to face each other, appearing mutually determined to win the tube of paste for themselves. A theatrical struggle ensued as the duo silently battled back and forth, twisting and turning their bodies, attempting to release each other’s grip on the tube.
Nick reached his left hand over and, using his instrument as a lever, released the flip-top lid of the tube. He gave the tube an almighty squeeze. Ribbons of sticky white paste curled their way out onto the tube and the two hands holding it.
Ryan hollered a melodramatic cry of disgust. Still holding his instrument in his left hand also, he used it to wipe a great smear of the paste up Nick’s arm, onto his shirt and across his cheek. Not to be outdone, Nick returned the favour, spreading paste through Ryan’s hair and down his leg. Tonight’s routine was obviously slapstick comedy. The owner’s favourite.
The boys looked at the audience. They were now hooting with laughter and couldn’t take their eyes off the hilarious antics of the pair. They looked so ridiculous covered in thick smudges of paste.
The hearty laughter brought the owners into the back of the room. They had to see for themselves what was so funny.
Surveying the spectacle in front of them, the owners had only one thing to say:
“Nicholas and Ryan! Good heavens! Wipe that toothpaste off, stop looking at yourselves in the mirror and just get on with brushing your teeth!”
