I was so excited. I was headed to my daughters to stay all night and keep all eight of my grand-children at the same time...... and at the same place. Their parents were all going out for the night so I was preparing for my own night out.
When I pulled into my daughter's driveway,it was raining. Two-year-old Piper came bouncing out the front door. “Gammie,” she yelled. I grinned and rushed over to her. “What are you doing out here in the rain,Piper,” I said. And I gathered her up in my arms. Then four-year-old Ella came rushing through the door.
“Gramma,” she exclaimed. “Are you staying all night?”
“I sure am,” I replied. “Where's the rest of the crew?”
“In the house.”
“Well how about we get out of this rain and go inside to see them?” Ella grabbed my hand and led the way. With Piper on my hip, we stepped inside the house and met my daughter, Stephanie, coming down the hall.
“Hey mom, glad you made it. They've been waiting and watching for you.” We chatted for a few minutes then Steph left to meet the other adults at the church. After she left, we walked down the hall to the bedrooms. Toys were scattered everywhere and piles of unfolded laundry sat around in laundry baskets. “Geez,” I thought. “How in the world does Steph do this every day....and home school!”
When we reached the girl's room, I heard music blaring from within, and it sounded like a highly competitive, on the edge of your seat, basketball game going on inside. I pounded on the door and yelled. “Hey, anybody home?”
“It's Gramma!” Three teenage girls came busting through the door. They dragged me into the room. “We've got something to show you,” Belle said. “Sit down.” I sat down on the bed with Piper in my lap and Ella right beside me. Belle turned the music up even louder and my ears were pounding, but I was still smiling.
The girls performed a dance routine for us and of course,I applauded and cheered them on till the very end. “Good job, girls, that was awesome! Now Gramma needs to go check on the boys. Olivia can you watch the little ones for a few?”
“Sure,” she said. “Come on girls and we'll teach you some cheers.”
“Yeah!” Ella yelled and grabbed her pom poms. Piper climbed down out of my lap and joined the others. I then left and walked to the boys room. The door was standing wide open and the three boys were sitting in the middle of the floor surrounded by plastic army men,and tanks with flashing lights and noisy engines.
“Hey guys, how's it going in here?” All three of them dog piled me and we wrestled around until I was worn out and short of breath. “Okay enough,” I laughed. “You guys win!” I pulled them off of me, got up, and headed to the kitchen to start some supper. I'd just started the water boiling for mac n cheese when Olivia came walking into the kitchen.
“Is Piper in here?” I turned away from the stove and looked at Olivia.
“No....I thought she was still in the bedroom with you guys.”
“Well, she was....but now I can't find her.” She shrugged and we went from room to room searching for Piper. We looked behind furniture, in closets, and even in the garage. Then I thought, “The bathroom.”
I took off running and opened the bathroom door. There sat Piper....... in the middle of the floor with an opened jar of Vaseline between her legs. She was smeared with the goop from head to toe and looked up at me grinning. “Otion....Gammie,” she said. “Otion.”
“No! Piper, that's not lotion!”
I reached down, grabbed the Vaseline jar, stripped her down, and put her in the tub. By the time I got her bathed and …..SOME of the Vaseline out of her hair.....the rest of the crew were in the living room watching a movie. So I joined them and plopped down in the recliner with Piper wrapped in a towel, sitting on my lap. “Whew,” I sighed. “What a night. But I wouldn't trade a moment of it for anything!"
