TITLE: Moderation in All Things

"I have GOT to lose weight," I moaned with frustration.
"Yeah, me too," my husband observed, as he climbed the steps behind me.
"We really have to do something."
"Yeah, I know. Well, at least we're exercising."
"Yeah," I sighed. "But obviously that's not enough."
He nodded and then grabbed the TV controller off the nightstand. "So what do you want to watch tonight?'
"Hmmm." I thought for a moment.
We looked at each other with knowing eyes and said in unison, "Food Channel".
The hands on the screen moved deliberately. Slow and mechanical, like a robot they sliced and diced. A women's monotone voice methodically described every step in the process so clear and to such great lengths, I felt exhausted.
Finally, the onion was thoroughly chopped.
The next day as I set out to replicate the meal seen on TV the night before, I asked my husband, "Was that ginger or allspice in that recipe?"
"I don't remember. Why don't you watch it again?"
I gave a flippant wave. "Oh, I can figure it out. It's just one ingredient." Then I added to the mix whatever spice I had on hand that I thought might taste best. Yet, I questioned after eating the results of my endeavor, maybe I should have followed the directions?
Following directions usually has never been a problem for me, especially when it came to dieting. It seems I've been following one diet or another almost my entire life, attempting to fight off the padding my body tended to accumulate.
Yet now as I get older, the battle is one I now wage with a more mature and thoughtful approach. Caloric intake no longer dictates my eating behavior as much as simply eating healthy. No fillers, no additives, no processed foods, are the thoughts that guide me now according to the latest findings by scientists on nutrition.
However, all that wholesome and healthy eating lead me to yet another question: Do I have to give up taste? What about salt? Who wants to eat anything that doesn't taste good, no matter how healthy it is?
I wondered, I worried, and then I went shopping.
As I dawdled down the aisles of our local discount grocery store, of course wholesome food was the main theme of my shopping objective. That meant there were very few aisles I needed to explore. My options were dwindling considerably.
With my shopping soon completed, I was rolling my cart towards the checkout line when something caught my attention. Out of the corner of my eye I saw it: Savory Blend. Curiosity compelled me to read on. New! Hemp & Flax Seed with Rosemary, Parsley & Garlic. Rich in Omeg-3, 3g Dietary Fiber per Serving.
I was elated. It was healthy, so it said, and the spices were some of my choice favorites. It was indeed a glorious discovery; so I snagged the bag off the shelf and dropped it in the basket.
When I arrived home and began putting the groceries away, I bubbled with enthusiasm. "Hey check this out. This is good healthy stuff," I said, proudly holding up the green plastic bag in front of my husband.
"Ahh, Flax Seed." He nodded approvingly. "Good find."
"Yeah, and look, you can put it on just about anything."
I carefully annunciated the directions on the bag. "Add Savory Hemp to any recipe to enhance the nutrition and savoriness of your favorite dish. Add it to any meal for extra flavoring with one simple sprinkle."
One simple sprinkle? I wondered. How much is that?
That evening I generously sprinkled the fine powder on our salad and in our soup. The next morning I sprinkled a copious amount on our omelets. By lunchtime, I decided NOT to sprinkle it on anything.
It did prove a flavorful addition to our meals; yet, we were unable to leave the house that day. Therefore, I learned by experience, once again, the old adage holds true: Moderation in all things.
