I am writing about how God wants to be involved in our lives and do things with us and for us. He is not selfish with His creative power. He invites us also to be creative. In Jeremiah 29:11, (NIV) God revealed He had plans for the post exilic Jews. Jesus had plans for Peter and Andrew. He told them, “I will make you fishers of men.” (Mt.4:19 NKJV)To Abraham was spoken the promise, “(For) all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.” (Ge.13:15 NKJV)
These people were in transit through their particular portion of history. We should be able to learn from their examples. God did not wind them up or insert a battery in them like the energizer bunny and let them go and run down or wear out. They were not without provision, protection, and purpose. He was making something out of them and helping them to be something.
For seventy years the Jews had been held captive in a foreign land. In His perfect plan God used these erstwhile stubborn and rebellious people to rebuild Jerusalem and begin preparation for the appearance of the Messiah in that city some six hundred later. He gave those rebuilders the plan, the opportunity, and the heart to accomplish the difficult task.
Peter’s and Andrew’s lives were changed forever as they became fishers of men. They put to use the natural stamina they had acquired from fishing for a living as they labored in building the infant Church with others of their fellow disciples. Instead of only feeding their families natural food from the Sea of Galilee they were now providing spiritual food from God’s spiritual provisions for many.
Abraham’s mission was to put a foot print in the Promised Land. He traveled to it in stages from Ur to Haran and finally to Hebron. He personally acquired only the cave of Machpelah as a burial place for his wife, Sarah, in the land God had promised to him. But the promise was generational and his descendants possessed the land many years later.
The lives these people lived as they followed God’s plan were not always easy. But by God’s grace they persevered. I would be remiss in not mentioning the role faith played in these people’s lives. I also need to remind us of the fact that Bible characters are not unique in being led of God to carry our His plans for their lives. I am sure there are millions of life stories of faith that are unreported. Stories that are the results of willing people who want to make a difference for God. You need to be one of those stories and so do I.
It is not our calling to be aimless travelers through our portion of history. On our journey from the cradle to the grave we Christians have a Master Planner lovingly directing our lives – that is if we listen when He says, “I have plans for you.” If there is any time that is critical for us to be in a conversation with God about His plans for our lives it is now in the year of our Lord, 2016. Our nation needs God’s plans for us.
