All our preconceived ideas that a Christian should be perfect suddenly become prevalent in our minds. How can we change overnight? The good news is, we don’t have to. As Christians, we begin a new, personal relationship with Christ. As we feel His love toward us, we gain a desire to please Him more. That desire makes us want to eliminate all sin from our lives.
Some sins are obvious, such as adultery, stealing, taking the Lord’s name in vain, etc. We will feel the need to deal with those almost immediately. Others such as envy, gossip, anger, and unforgivness may become clearer to us as we get closer to the Lord.
We need to relax and let the Lord help us deal with these one step at a time. The Lord is gentle and brings up each sin He wants us to conquer when He knows we are ready. As we get the victory over one sin, the Lord brings another to our understanding. As we yield to His gentle promptings, we experience a gradual reduction of sin in our lives.
To keep from getting discouraged, we should celebrate our progress along the way. We must be careful not to let the enemy bring condemnation. Instead of concentrating too hard on current struggles, we need to rejoice in past victories. Although, we never want to use God’s grace as an excuse to continue in our sin, we need not be overly hard on ourselves when we temporarily fall back into a particular sin. Just ask forgiveness again and keep trying until we overcome.
The Lord understands our human nature and He is willing to work with us to become all He desires us to be. Most important, He wants us to know that He loves us, just as we are!
