You can tell, there’s no drudgery involved.
I am contemplating, the seemingly endless
assortment of created things:
sky, sun, moon, stars, clouds,
planets, mountains, valleys, deserts,
oceans, rivers, lakes, streams,
fresh water, salt water . . .
people – red, black, brown, yellow, white,
short, tall, skinny, fat,
beautiful outside, beautiful inside . . .
roses, tulips, daffodils, sunflowers,
carnations, lilies, lilacs, daisies,
zinnias, lady slippers, violets,
orchids, birds of paradise,
poinsettias . . .
oak, hickory, maple, pine,
cedar, fir, sycamore, aspen,
dogwood, redbud, cypress,
walnut, almond, pecan,
apple, peach, pear, plum,
grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange,
cherry, pineapple, coconut, banana,
mango, pomegranate, fig, date,
olive, avocado . . .
squash – butternut, acorn, zucchini,
pumpkins, potatoes, carrots, celery,
radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, corn,
green beans, black-eyed peas,
english peas, purple hull peas, lentils,
pinto beans, navy beans, turnips,
spinach, kale, red onions, yellow onions,
green onions, chives, garlic . . .
wolves, foxes, coyotes, dogs, hyenas,
lions, leopards, cats, jaguars, panthers, tigers,
bears – grizzly, black, brown, polar,
raccoons, skunks, porcupines, groundhogs,
opossums, armadillos, anteaters, iguanas . . .
horses, donkeys, mules, cows, goats,
sheep, llamas, zebras, giraffes,
kangaroos, koalas, chimpanzees,
monkeys, apes, gorillas, orangutans,
elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses,
beavers, muskrats, snakes,
lizards, chameleons, turtles,
alligators, crocodiles . . .
whales, dolphins, walruses, seals,
sharks, manta rays, eels, swordfish,
marlin, tuna, sailfish, bluegill,
perch, bass, salmon, trout, pike,
lobster, crab, oysters, clams, shrimp,
squid, octopi, jellyfish, starfish . . .
walking sticks, katydids, dragonflies, horseflies,
ladybugs, locusts, beetles, grasshoppers,
caterpillars, moths, butterflies, praying mantis,
spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, ants,
fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, gnats,
wasps, bumblebees, honeybees . . .
bluebirds, redbirds, woodpeckers, orioles,
chickadees, cardinals, finches, mockingbirds,
robins, geese, chickens, ducks, ostriches,
pelicans, seagulls, blue herons, storks,
flamingos, falcons, hawks, eagles, owls . . .
At the end of the book of John, we’re told
Jesus did many other things, that if they were
all written down, the whole world would not
have room for the books that would be written.
I think that could also be said,
of what God did at creation.
It’s amazing to me to realize
he’s doing it again, creating
a new heaven and a new earth.
It’s thrilling to imagine,
what no eye has seen, no
ear has heard, and no mind
has conceived.*
