Dan Simms splashed warm water on his face, trying to remove a few layers of dust and dirt. He tried to ignore the hunger in his belly, but it was getting harder to do. Dan had been preaching for two weeks in the open camps of South Eastern Ethiopia. He was sure God had led him here, and prayed for grace to enable him to bring the living waters to a people dying of thirst in more ways than one.
That afternoon there were no meetings. Dan layed down to catch a few minutes of sleep when suddenly he heard someone hollering for him.
“Missionary Dan! Missionary Dan!” he heard a thick accented voice call to him. Dan got up and saw Hakim running toward his tent.
“Missionary Dan! God healed me, look, see what I can do!” The excitement in his voice was contagious and Dan watched as a near crippled young man bent over, touched this toes, ran and jumped all around as he had not been able to do for years.
Tears flowed unashamedly down his beautiful ebony face. His eyes filled with overflowing joy and light.
Dan thought, Now this is water for my weary soul, thank you Jesus.
Hakim was not done thanking God. His heart was set on fire, and when Dan was finished preaching in that area, he headed back to the city with him to finish school he had started years before. He wanted to become a pastor.
Dan parted with Hakim, but they kept in touch over the next months. Hakim wrote a beautiful testimony about all God had done in him, and sent it to Dan. With Hakim's permission, it was published online on the website “God Happenings around the World” and was read by many people. Many were blessed, but none more so than a man named Pierre Leveau of France. Pierre was considered a self made man. His company had made it to the Fortune 500 list, and he had not a need in the world. Pierre was still dissatisfied with life.
He accidentally came across a website called “God Happenings,” and was about to click away when he saw a picture of a young Ethiopian man with the caption, 'From Rags to Riches.' It caught his interest and he read on how this man had been crippled with pain for years, and how God had healed him through a missionary that had come to preach. Hakim, then dedicated his life to the Lord, and was working to better life for those in utter poverty where he came from.
For the next week, Pierre could not stop thinking about this man and the people he represented. One night he dreamed he was pouring a pitcher of crystal clear water into the mouth of a young Ethiopian child. The next morning he set in motion that which would not only change his life, but the lives of so very many.
Eleven months later, and four wells dug, Pierre received word from his doctor. He had a growth on his back that would need to be removed. He chose a surgeon from the United States, and flew for a consultation.
Dr. Jones sat at his desk waiting for his next patient. This appointment was simply to be a consultation for the removal of a tumor on a man's spine. Pierre came in and they began to talk about their lives, what they did, and as Pierre shared how his life had changed due to an article he had read online, something started happening in Dr. Jones. He remained professional, but his heart was racing. All that Pierre had said about emptiness, and how there must be more resonated within him. Finally they got around to his discussing his surgery, when Pierre asked, “Is there a church I could attend tomorrow while I am still here?”
“Sure, the one I used to go to. I guess I got so busy I just didn't bother any more. But it's a great place, and it's close by. In fact, I will go with you. I haven't been in a long time and it will do me some good.”
They had no way of knowing a missionary speaker named Dan Simms would speak that day, and by the end of the day hearts were woven and bound together. A team from the America, France, and Ethiopia were about to change the world.
