*What did you expect would happen?*
**She trapped you.**
*You wanted it.*
**Just look what’s happening now. She cut you off!**
*She’s a sensitive woman.*
**She manipulated you. Are you going to let this stand?**
John’s internal dialogue continued as he marked the end of another workday by pulling into the parking spot at the apartment he rented with his girlfriend. Sally greeted him when he entered and tried to kiss him. John brushed past her, throwing his coat over a chair. In the bathroom he examined his face in the mirror while the voices in his head grew louder, the one condemning him.
Bursting into the kitchen where Sally was peeling carrots with a utility knife, John demanded, “When are we going to have sex again?”
She shrank back from him. “The doctor thinks it’s best for the baby that we, you know, don’t do it.”
“You’re only a month pregnant. I don’t believe it.” His bulk towered over her and she retreated again.
“All right, I’ll tell you the truth.” She swallowed, her fingers fidgeting with the knife. “You know I’ve been going to church.”
“Waste of time. Why would you want anything to do with that garbage?”
She ignored him. “In the sermon on Sunday the pastor spoke about the woman caught in adultery. He said fornication – having sex outside of marriage – is the same. Jesus said it’s a sin.”
Amazed, John said, “You don’t want us having sex because of Jesus?”
Thinking he was getting it, Sally happily said, “Yes! That’s it!”
John’s eyes narrowed. “And the fetus? What about that?”
“I want to keep the baby.”
His face turned crimson. “We agreed to abort it. It’s just a mass of cells.”
“I can’t do that now, John.”
The voices in his head began again.
**See, she doesn’t care for you.**
*Maybe she really wants the baby.*
**Remember how she tricked you into not wearing a condom?**
*You were tired of using one and were planning to stop anyway.*
**No sex and now you’re trapped with her, along with a kid. Are you going to let that stand?**
*She’s not a bad woman.*
**Are you kidding? She’ll control you all your life if you don’t do something.**
*How can you say that?*
**She’ll destroy you.**
**You must destroy her first.**
*Think about this. Step back from it.*
**Look at those sly eyes, that lying mouth. How many more lies has she told you? Maybe the kid isn’t even yours.**
John said, “Who have you been seeing on the side?”
“What are you saying, John? I’ve been faithful to you alone. I want to marry you.”
“No you don’t. You want your Jesus who won’t let you have any fun and wants to tie me down.” It felt like an eruption inside him. It burst into his head and before his eyes. Red stars. Bolts of lightning burning him, torching his mind. “No!”
He grabbed at the knife in Sally’s hand, the blade cutting deep into his fingers as he tore it from her. Blood spattered from the wounds, but he took no notice. From his street fighting days he automatically held the knife low, blade up, and plunged it into her belly, ripping upward.
Sally screamed and tripped backward, falling to the floor.
One voice urged him on.
**Do it! Finish the job!**
He lunged at her cowering form as she scrabbled against the wall in the corner trying to escape. His foot slipped on the blood that had gushed from her stomach and he careened backward. John’s head hit the edge of the counter and his vision went dark.
The demon egging him on, encouraging his rage, jumped up and down in frustration. It screamed in John’s mind: **Get up! Get up! Don’t let the moment pass!**
But it had.
Her hand trying to hold her bowels in, Sally dialed 911. As her lifeforce ebbed, she prayed. She asked God to forgive her, and somehow remembering John, she prayed forgiveness for him.
The demon, hearing her utter, “In Jesus’ Name,” screeched again and took flight. Later, when it stood before its superior, the greater demon said, “You’ve failed.” The darker force snapped its fingers and the being before it disappeared. It found itself in chains behind bars in the Eternal Dungeon.
The greater demon shook its head and said to no one in particular. “If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself.”
