“Look out Henry! Look out! You’re going to break that chair. How many times have I told you to stay off of the good dinning room chairs? Just wait until you father gets home, we’ll see then how you’ll learn to obey me.”
Henry’s step mom was shrieking at the top of her voice, like she usually did when Henry caused trouble at home. Henry really couldn’t help himself and stay in a peace and quiet mode. Henry was 17, weighed 300 lbs. and 5’11”. Every time he took a step, things just seemed to rattle and fall off the shelves or table and break. Hard as he would try, Henry couldn’t be graceful.
Pearl, Henry’ little step sister, on the other hand didn’t do anything wrong. She was petit, pretty, and perfect in every thing, as her mother said. Pearl got anything she wanted and more. All she had to do was blink her eye lashes at her dad, and he did whatever she asked. She learned quickly how to get her way, and she was only 10.
Though he was very fat, Henry was determined to lose weight and make his father proud of him. The step mother was determined to keep Henry overweight. She would cook starchy foods and insist that Henry eat second and third helpings. Henry’s dad didn’t realize what his wife was doing to Henry. So he was always yelling at Henry. The more Dad yelled the more Henry ate.
Henry conjured up a plan in his mind. “I’m going to quit eating for forty days, just like Jesus did in the wilderness. I’ll take my food up to my room, and tell them I’m not feeling well. Then I’ll give the food to sparky, the dog.
Well, this plan worked for about two weeks. Sparky got fatter, Henry got hungrier, and nobody even noticed. With his stomach growling all time, Henry would sneak down to the kitchen and grab anything that was edible. Consequently, Henry was struggling with a losing battle.
Wow, out of nowhere, came this GIRL! Her name was Mandy. She had a sweet fetching face, with a personality to match. Henry was immediately smitten with her. When his friend introduced her, all
Henry could do was stutter. Hhhi, I ..I’m ……I think HHEnry .”
Mandy stood there and just laughed, a round hearty laugh. Mandy was sort of round also. The two of them hit it off immediately.
“Want to go have a soda with me ?” Henry struggled with the words.
“Sure, I’d love to,” quipped Mandy.
As the two new friends sipped their sodas, they both agreed that losing weight was a common goal.
“Let’s surprise our folks and work out my churches’ gym. We have a great youth leader that will help us. I’ve been waiting for just the right person to work out with me. I think I have found him.” Mandy smiled at Henry and his heart melted right away.
Saturday morning the two friends ventured over to the church gym. Dave Young, the youth leader met them at the door. “First of all, we always have a Bible study before we exercise. We need to hear what God says about keeping our bodies fit for the work of the Lord.”
Henry was taken completely off guard. He had rarely been to church nor heard ‘God’s Word’. “I guess it’s alright. I have never done anything like this before, but if it’s good with Mandy, it’s cool with me.”
So the group of about 10 kids sat down on the gym floor and proceeded to hear what Paul had said to the Corinthian Church: 6:19,20, ”What, know ye not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost, ...Ye are bought with a price ,….therefore glorify God in your body and in your Spirit which are God’s.”
Henry’s mouth was wide open as he heard the word. He decided right then and there to see that his body was made into a Temple for the Lord.
During the next few months, the two young people rigorously exercised, dieted and studied the Word. Their parents began to notice the change in them and were pleasantly pleased. Living at home wasn’t nearly as bad as it used to be for Henry. He and his step mom were actually trying to get along. And best of all, Henry gave his life to the Lord! As for Mandy and Henry, only time will tell.
