As Jack surfaced to consciousness, he had a splitting headache. He had never experienced such agony before in his life, and felt helpless to do anything about it, other than to wait and hope it might go away.

After a few minutes, the pain abated, but it was replaced immediately with a strange, churning sensation inside that concerned him almost as much. No sooner had that feeling begun to subside, than an excruciating pain across the front of his skull caused his eyes to pop open. The first thing he saw was a knife. It loomed so large that he couldn't focus on the one who wielded it. He wanted to close his eyes, but couldn't, couldn't move, couldn't scream. The knife descended, gouging just below his eyes.

Was that smoke he smelled?

Who was perpetrating this torment, and why? He had never hurt anyone, that he could remember anyway, that might have provoked such a malicious attack. Why torture him instead of delivering a death thrust? If this mutilation were a nightmare, why couldn't he awaken?

Still immobilized, the knife plunged in above his chin, cleaving horizontally. His mouth opened...

And he smiled as a candle lit his face to greet the costumed children.
