“What’s this all about, Rooster? I was in the middle of a nice nap.” Cow lazily joined Rooster by the fence. Her dress was rather loose and not leaving much to the imagination.
Gasp! Her udders are showing.
“Be patient, Cow. I’ll let Dog tell you when he gets here.” Rooster pecks at the ground looking for a morsel.
Soon after, Cat and her Kittens arrive followed by Duck and Goose. Weasel manages to get in but stays near the trough for fear of Cat. Horse makes a grand entrance and takes his place rightfully so next to Dog. The only ones missing are Pig and the Sheep.
“This meeting has been called today because the Sheep are up to no good. They have taken to speaking of a Shepard that watches over them at night. I have walked at night around these pastures and seen no evidence of this Shepard. When I question the Sheep, they tell me this Shepard protects them from Lion and other nightly beasts that roam the hillside.” Dog stands tall and adjusts his tie with its gold pin glistening.
Horse speaks up, “I saw the Sheep just yesterday at the far brook. They were drinking and when I asked them why they were not drinking at their usual watering hole nearer the farm, they bleated that the Shepard had led them to this water. They told me this water at the brook was ‘living’ because its runs clear and pure and never ends.”
“What have you say about this everyone? The Sheep are obviously mad or dumb to believe in something they cannot prove exists. Like I said, I have walked and walked at night but have never seen proof of this Shepard. Should we alert the Farmer and if so, how shall we do it?” Dog proposed this question to all in the meeting.
“I’ll believe it when Pig flies. By the way, where is Pig?” Duck laughs and punches Goose in the wing at the thought of big, fat Pig flying through the air.
“Here I am.” Pig’s voice trails over the heads of all standing beneath the shadows of the barn.
Everyone looks up and to their surprise is Pig standing in the hay loft window.
“I have seen the Shepard. I talk to him every day. He tells me that if I follow him and his instructions that I can be free of the dangers and life at the farm. My time here at the farm is short. It will not be long until the Farmer takes me to market. The Shepard has found a way to save me!”
With that last remark, Pig runs forward to the very edge of the bay and takes a huge leap in the air. On his back are huge pink wings flapping. He swoops down and flies over the heads of all below.
Weasel runs for cover and hides in a hay bale while Cow stampedes into the barn. Quickly on her hoofs are Duck, Cat, the Kittens and Goose. Rooster takes flight to the top of the barn for a better view and Dog and Horse peer up into the sky waiting for Pig to fall.
Pig never falls but flies straight over the pasture and far away from the farm screaming loudly, “Have Faith in the Shepard my friends!”
“Everyone, do not run and hide! Pig is foolish just like the Sheep.” Dog barks whilst loosening his tie.
Horse nudges him and says, “Dog, I have witnessed a miracle here today and will speak with Sheep more about this Shepard of theirs. If he can save Pig, then maybe he can save the rest of us. My years of usefulness are coming to an end as well. Next stop, glue factory.”
So, Dog is left standing by the fence as everyone else goes back to doing whatever they were doing before. He then hears the Farmers leading the Sheep back into the pasture. He runs out to meet him and to tell of him of all he has seen and heard. Rooster crows.
