The Day of the Lord? Yes, I think of that day
as rather a grand one, but still far away.
The moon turned to blood? (1) Well… perhaps slightly red,
like the eyes of the sinners who wretchedly shed
their tears of repentance – though rather too late –
while along with the righteous I sit in the gate
and hear the Lord’s judgement without cause for fear
or reason for trembling or shedding a tear.
And the sound? Like the wail of professional mourners,
with well-practised dirges and flutes on street corners;
but as for that wailing, let’s hope they’ll refine
and subdue it, and make it… well, more like a whine.
The Poor Sinner:
The Day o’ the Lord? Well, it’s my firm belief
it comes of a sudden, breaks in like a thief (2),
unexpected, at night, when you’re quietly sleepin’,
and sets all the household a-howlin’ and weepin’.
That terrible day we’d better beware –
we’ll be fleein’ a lion and facin’ a bear,
or puttin’ our hands on a snake on the wall, (3)
and the judgement o’ God will be over us all.
I’m hopin’ th’ Almighty’ll show some compassion
amid the lamentin’ and sobbin’ and gnashin’,
the beatin’ o’ breasts and the rendin’ o’ garmints,
when he lays his great hand on us mis’rable varmints.
(1) See Joel 2:31
(2) See 2 Peter 3:10
(3) See Amos 5:19
