Four spoken words--I love you so.
Powerful words for me back when
I lived my life trapped in my skin.
A classmate in my public school
Held steadfast to the Golden Rule
One day while in Science class
She smiled at meet, a note she passed.
The note displayed an invitation
to meet her at The Pizza Station.
Why on earth, would she ask me
Thoughts in my head said, This can’t be.
On the outside I pretended tough
‘Cause I’d been hurt quite enough
But she, she was not discouraged
While I did nothing to encourage.
Nervously I shot a glance
Wondering, should I take a chance.
She signed “your friend” above her name
I needed one, but what’s her game?
To her note I did reply
“Yes, I’ll go, but why me, why?”
While eating pizza she confessed
She saw through my loneliness.
I was disfigured as a child
When fiery flames went raging wild .
Fingers pointed, classmates stared,
My burned up face made them scared.
How she saw a different me
Back then was a mystery,
She asked me over after school
Her mother’s pies made me drool!
I remember feeling quite uplifted
The day she said that I was gifted.
“How so?” I asked somewhat confused.
“Nothing happens that God can’t use.”
Then quite boldly she held a mirror
“What do you see, what do you fear?”
“I see a face scarred in my youth.”
“No!” she said. “Now hear the truth.”
“Your boyhood pain made scars emerge
Where none exist,” then on the verge
of tears, she stroked my damaged face.
God, on that day, my fears erased.
Now grown the scars seemed small.
But I hadn’t noticed, not at all.
Until a girl encouraged me--
By God’s prompting, befriended me.
“He loves you so, you must believe it,”
Though at the time, I couldn’t conceive it.
She encouraged me, “Read your Bible,
To Him, each of us is liable.”
Looking back, I’m grateful for my life.
I praise God for my lovely wife
Who long ago took control,
And with God’s help, made me whole.
Today I’m helping kids in pain
Encouraging them, I explain
“God would never bring you to it,
If He didn’t intend to see you through it.”
Some know the God of whom I speak,
While others in their faith are weak.
I share God’s Word in our appointments
‘Till hope replaces disappointments.
