The first we will discuss is Eros, which is a love that a man and a woman share in through the bond of a romantic relationship. This love in my opinion is more associated with feelings and in time if a heart-breaking incident occurs falls short and runs out being replaced with bitterness, resentfulness, and even possibly hostility. Eros does not have a firm foundation to stand on and henceforth is likely to topple and fall when things get rough and cannot be true love. The second we will discuss is philia it is the love that you will find among friends and family it is a very personal love not a romantic one such as Eros. It can and is mistaken for true love because people who express it toward one another find that it will be there when things get rough in their lives but it too is subject to not having a firm foundation. Philia like Eros can run out when the trust that founded the relationship is betrayed it can result in a messy situation between friends and family members it also is not true love. The third and final one we will discuss is agape and it is a love that knows no bounds and has no limits as to how high is can reach for it is based upon the well-being of others and is not limited to feelings but is an action that one takes regardless of how one feels about the object of affection. It is a love that lets another person know that they are of great importance mind, body, and soul because those who express it are not looking to receive anything in return. Jesus Christ proclaimed it toward everyone in His three years as an itinerate preacher and God has displayed it form the beginning of creation up until this very day and it is agape.
In closing I remember the words of the apostle Paul: “There are three things that will endure faith, hope, and love and the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:13).” As I look at these words the almighty God comes to mind and the fact that we who have come to know His Son Jesus Christ are fully convinced that He is love. If God is love we must ask ourselves is He Eros, philia, or agape. God must be one of the three if He is agape then are we following His example that can be found in Jesus Christ His Son. Who set aside His place in eternal glory and came in the form of flesh to set free those who would be considered the lost and outcast of society. Jesus Christ who took love a step further and suffered and died on a cross so that we would not have to and has set the standard for love which is defined as agape.
