When I was young I was stubborn, especially when it came to obeying my parents.
Having learnt to ride a bike, I used to love going round the lanes in the Dorset village where I lived - in all weathers. Stupidly, I would ignore my Mum’s instructions and not care a bit about what to wear even when it was wet or cold.
One result of my foolishness was getting lots of chilblains on my ears.
I remember Mother getting various creams and treatments from the chemist or doctor and applying them endlessly. And I still had chilblains.
Then one day, my Gran remembered what she’d heard way back in the 19th century - an old lady promoted a cure for chilblains that was completely natural - juice squeezed from succulent houseleek leaves mixed with a bit of fresh cream from the some milk.
Mum did that and my chilblains disappeared very quickly.
Praise the Lord that he has provided wonderful remedies in his creation!
House leek is sempervivum tectorum, a succulent which often grows in very dry situations like walls roofs.
