I had just read the 1921 novel Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C Douglas, and I wanted to be like the main character in that book – generous but doing it in secret.
Giving to others had always been a part of my life – but when I started living for Jesus - that action became an unction.
I pressed a $20 tip into the hand of every waitress at a near-by coffee shop one morning, just to let her know that I appreciated the hard work that she did - until the manager told me to “control yourself.”
A young family from our church needed to buy groceries, so I handed all the money that I had been saving for a Mother-of-the-Bride Dress, over to them.
I slipped a $100 bill into the purse of a single hockey-mom who had been struggling to support her daughter in the sport.
The next candidate for Prime Minister of Canada was passing through our town that day – so I spent time in prayer so that I could present a message of hope to him.
And instead of feeling empty after I completed all of these actions – I experienced the abundance that is full to over-flowing when the Lord graciously saw what I did, and returned the favour.
Like the anonymous man who had been watching my husband and I as we cared for the poor, then sold his business and gave us $100,000.00 to help buy the church building.
Or the young mother who is alive and well now instead of perishing at the end of a rope because we prayed and the police got there just in time.
What a generous God we have, that He would let us share the reigns with Him, as He guides this precious work of salvation.
I prayed every day for 10 years that a daughter who had not spoken to her mother for the previous 25 years – would pick up that phone and call. I had no idea where this daughter lived, except that I was determined not to give up.
This was a well-known family in Canada, and it was heart-breaking for me to have to see that mother – who had been my mom’s best friend – suffering in such pain while at the same time, maintaining a brave face for the public.
Then one summer my husband and I vacationed in a city in Canada that we had never been to before, and as I walked through the downtown area, God spoke strongly into my heart – Pray right now. Somehow, I knew exactly what He meant, so I bowed my head in prayer even as the other people stepped around me.
I found out later that at the very moment that I bowed my head - this girl was in that same city all alone in her apartment - dying. And I will always hope in the scripture in James 5:16 Amplified Bible, where it states, “the heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much when put into action and made effective by God. It has tremendous power.”
No one does generosity better.
