The only way to keep a thought or a memory alive is to record it. Man has devised many ways of creating permanent records. Inscribing on stone towers , clay tablets, leather scrolls and papyrus sheets are some of them. Later on books were written and stored in great libraries around the world. Among all the books ever written the Bible is the most elaborate one, as it covers the origin of man, through his fall, redemption, restoration and until his entrance into eternity. It records the majesty of God the creator, the laws of how to worship Him, and how to live a life of righteousness.

To me the most important part of the Bible is the record of the Ten Commandments. These are the basic laws for God's chosen people to obey. What makes them so specially unique is that they were recorded by God's own hand. (Exodus 32:16 and Deuteronomy 10:2) Jesus affirmed their importance and summarized them into two commandments, Love God and Love man (Mark 12:29-31). Thus if you love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, you will not bow down to any other god, you will not do anything to dishonor His name, you will faithfully worship Him and keep the Sabbath holy. These cover the first four commandments.

In the same way if you love man, you will honor your parents. If you sincerely love your neighbor you will not consider harming him, you will not steal anything from him, you will not gossip about him, and you will not lust or covet his possessions. These cover the next six commandments. But Jesus went on to explain that even if you are angry with your brother and call him a fool you are guilty of murder and if you cast a roving lustful eye, you are guilty of adultery ( Matthew 5:21-28). This seems a pretty hard order, for controlling the tongue and the eye and the thoughts they generate are not easy. Consider : if Eve had controlled her eye she would not have been driven out of Eden and if Ananias and Sapphira had controlled their tongue they wouldn't have died.

However, as children of God it is our duty to faithfully record the Ten Commandments on our hearts and obey them with all of our strength and with the help of the Holy Spirit. If we fail and with contrite spirit, humbly fall on our knees before God, confess our sin, and plead for forgiveness, God who in His abundant mercy, has provided salvation through the atoning sacrifice of His beloved Son and our Savior Jesus Christ, will forgive us. To have this privilege of being the children of such a magnanimous God and to have such a loving Savior, it is only meet that we cherish and record His words in our memory and try earnestly to obey His laws.
