How much truth lay behind those words? He was a firm believer in the hierarchy of race, an advocate white colonialism being for the good of the “primitives.” Nevertheless, he was a national hero who saved many lives and led the nation through one of its darkest times. Was he a racist or just a product of his time? Would that be a valid justification or a fearful excuse? What has his name become?
The months go by and Churchill still stares out, searching for some significance in his existence – another dull statue in the dim light of London.
Thomas peers up at the figure one more time. This man may have been a giant; the pigeons clearly weren’t aware of that.
Idly clutching the cross hanging from his neck, Thomas sighs and heads out through the streets of London. His friend has invited him to some rock show to watch the latest legend, almost certainly caught up in the latest scandal. He flashes his card to the bus driver and proceeds to spend his time skimming through the days paper: another eulogy for the last latest legend. These men’s actions defied societal expectation but the scandal had little immediate affect on them for they had no care for their reputation. He was a giant to many – an inspiration, a symbol of freedom. In truth, he had but one objective: live life to the full. Clearly this man’s fast living has caught up to him. Now, no matter the controversy he caused, he shall fade away into insignificance – another name in the funeral hall of fame: another distant memory.
Thomas continues to flick through the pages, revealing a dark truth. Television personalities, preachers, politicians – all seem to be involved in scandal. Whether an ongoing problem or a single moment of weakness, every giant will fall. Thomas sighs and idly clutches his cross as his mind begins to wander.
Stumbling through the misty depths of his memory, it takes him to David. The man’s aim had caused a giant to stumble and fall. The man went on to become an inspiration, a giant in faith, a King. Lustful temptation caused this giant to stumble and fall: an adulterer, a murderer, dead in reputation.
He ponders one of the most magnificent statues described in all of literature: a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet of iron and clay. Each represented the superpower of the day: the sinful tyrants. Each represented the giants of the World – each inevitably crumbled.
Thomas sighed and idly clutched his cross. Was there no hope of society? We select the latest hero to worship only for them to fall in disgrace.
He considered the mountain, the solid foundation it provides, its magnificent, its constancy. Thomas sighs in relief and clutches his cross once more: once more filled with hope.
